Another "what outdrive do I have" question

I did a search and looked through 50 pages of hits but without luck. I saw a link a month or 2 ago that Don S. posted that showed the difference between Mercruiser outdrives.

Here is the scenario:

1978 Wellcraft V20 Cuddy, 898 Mercruiser. The outdrive was replaced by the previous owner 3 years ago with a reman unit. I am certain the original drive was a 260, but I'm not so sure about the replacement, I think it is an Alpha 1. How can I tell? The top cap has no eye hook by the way.

Thanks Don S.! That was the one I was looking for. Definatly an Alpha btw.

I used to be stationed in Ketchikan. I got there 2 weeks before the Exxon Valdez "incident". Spent 3 1/2 years there (Ketchikan). I love Alaska, miss it sometimes. But is way to far away from friends and family. That, for some, is the attraction.
