Good morning,

There seems to be other GT150 people out and about, so I thought I would ask my question. A mechanic told me that my timer base is bad. I do not have any symptoms like cylinders cutting out or missing. My only concern is that I cannot get the revs out of it that I would like. I am running it on a '89 Ranger 375V with a 24 raker prop at about 5000 rpm. Could a bad timer base be liminting the rev's?

Thanks a bunch,
Duck L.

Re: anouther '89 GT150 question

D.L.,

I have a '89 150XP Evinrude. What is a "timer base"? Mine has the factory aluminum prop, which I believe (haven't looked at it in a while) is a 15" x 19 pitch. I am running it on a '91 Alumacraft Competitor 185CS, which is a side-console walleye style boat. I too only get around 5000 rpm, and it only tops out at just over 40 mph. This seems really slow for a 150 on a boat like that, but what do I know. Top speed doesn't vary much between having just me in the boat or 3 guys and a bunch of fishing gear.

Re: anouther '89 GT150 question

Hey man,

The timer base is mounted under the flywheel. It is a round black doughnut looking thing with two wire harnesses each of which goes to a powerpack. I cann't believe you're only getting 5,000 rpm with the 19 prop. Sounds kind of funny.

Any takers on these low reving GT 150's?

Good luck,
d.l.

Do a search, Clayton told the exact procedure a time or two on how to check the timer base. Or, pick up a manual it will also provide instructions on how to check the timer base.

Good luck.
:)
