Is more copper better? Some paints by Interlux that are more expensive have only 48%copper than some cheaper ones. Interlux ACT has 48 %copper and the boatersworld Ablative 56 has 56 % copper. The expensive micron extra has only 38% copper. I don't get it. This is my 1st boat that I am using bottom paint. Help??? What should I use. (NewEngland-MA salt water boat)

Is the boat going to stay in the water for the season? Or do you plan on towing it all the time? That plays a factor on the paint as well.

Well, I don't know from paints - but reading the propaganda... er.. manufacturers descriptions:

Interlux: "Micron Technology provides the longest lasting multi season protection with the ability to haul and re-launch with out painting.

It uses less copper more efficiently then hard bottom paints."

So, whatever micron technology is - they are claiming it needs less copper to do the same thing as non-micron technology paints.

Now - I can't help you with which sort of paint is better.

It will be in the water for the summer season. I might take it out once in awhile to check & flush the engine. I am considering using Petit Hydrocoat, Interlux ACT or Micron extra. Maybe even the boatersworld Ablative 56 or 67. Can I relaunch using the ACT? It says multiseason but it doesn't say relaunch w/out re-paint. Doesn't multiseason mean the same thing?

Shaun, All ablative paints are multiseason. Copper content varies by manufacturer and by paint color. Higher copper content is a must for warmer waters.

Discount marine stores do not manufacturer paint. You should be able to match the West Marine and Boaters World brands to Pettit or Interlux. You may also mix colors from the same manufacturer (same kind of paint) to create a custom color.

Bottom line, choose an ablative bottom paint with the highest copper content, in your choice of color, with the cheapest price. Prime the hull if it is bare with either a highbuild epozy primer for protection against blisters, or a regular bottom paint primer. If the boat is new or unpainted, big sections of bottom paint will fall off, if you do not prime. Use masking tape to get a straight waterline.

I was going to suggest checking with Interlux also. The first boat I got (late '50's) I had to refinish and the paint I used was Interlux marine paint. Had a propeller on the front of the can. They must be good, survived the test of time.

Re: anti-fouling paint copper %?

The bottom was painted already w/ the Interlux ACT. I just bought the boat and the prior owner trailered it and only used it a couple times a year so the paint is almost perfect(some spots chipped off-probably from the trailer) The paint was redone beginning of 06 season with minimul use each year. I am just going to lightly sand the bare spots and recoat. I will prob go with the Ablative 67 as it has a high copper content w/Irigarol.

IMHO ! Use Micron Extra...
Next year in only requires a minor touch-up.
It can be thinned @ 10%.

Been usining it for many years & Luv it
For a new hull, make sure it is proplt Primed, to receive the top coat....
