Anti Seize or Not?

So, now that I have the fuel pump, water pump, starter and alternator all mounted, I need to mount the exhaust manifolds. I have seen some arguments that say aluminum/copper based anti seize should never be used in marine applications and that the marine anti seize won't stand up to the heat of the exhaust manifolds. Looking for thoughts on using or not using anti seize on the exhaust manifold, manifold risers, and spark plugs.

Ayuh,..... It took several years, but DonS convinced me that Perfect Seal, or Form a gasket #3 is a much better alternative than never-seize, as it really Works,.....

I’ve been using this for years, it’s rated for up to 400*F so for marine exhaust it’s fine.

yes. Permatex #3 is now called aviation

it is also what Volvo Penta slaps between all their outdrive parts to keep them sealed and able to pull apart.

as a side note, on a regular vehicle. Maalox or other tummy feel good stuff works great to coat exhaust bolts. the temp turns it into a powder, and 20 years later, they come out as if they were just installed.

I've only known it as milk of magnesia, and that awful taste. I don't always eat chalk, but when I do I prefer to drink it

Just remember if using any kind of lubricant/anti seize you'll need to recalculate the torque settings. I ended up opting for no lubricant on my manifold and elbow bolts!

Well, there are a lot of different opinions on the torque spec for the manifold bolts. I went with 25 ft-lb.

I've got the V6 and 25 lb-ft is what the manual states but that would need to be reduced if you use anti-seize.

Well, there are a lot of different opinions on the torque spec for the manifold bolts. I went with 25 ft-lb.

calibrated elbow...... its a 3/8" grade 8 bolt. your fine between 25 and 35 lb-ft

I need to put new studs into my gimbal housing so, continuing this thread beyond the engine, should I use aviation gasket sealer/maker on the threads of the studs (and bolts) or blue locktite for drive parts and assembly? Looking to make sure they are secure and not going to seize.

One product I used when I worked on ROVs in the offshore industry, that I rarely see mentioned in any forums is AquaShield. It's ubiquitous offshore, they go through it by the case-load. I scored a few tubes for home and I use it on anything that gets dipped in the drink, When I got my new (2006) engine and drive I took all the screws and bolts out and 'AquaShielded' them. 15 years on and they still come out like they were installed at the factory yesterday. I also use it on the disc brake caliper mounting screws on the boat trailer. Obviously they can go from very 'warm' after a long drive to getting dunked in salt water and going very cold very quickly. The first time I needed to change the pads, I was a little worried about how easily the screws would come out. I need not have been concerned, once the torque was backed off, they unscrewed by hand!

Thanks all... I have aviation gasket sealer on hand so guess I will use that.. I want to put the studs into the gimbal housing permanently today even though I need to temporarily mount the gimbal housing and transom plate for another test fit of the engine with the new stringers.
