Anti-Seize ?'s

Ok

I just about to throw in a towel on a post on a wake boater site

he states this anti-seize is the best to use on marine motors

it even states ideal for marine use!!!


I know for fact that copper is a no-no on aluminium parts!!

So DON S, what is your take, i use the marine only anti-seize

Well,.... Don calls it Alwaysieze...

I've been Slathering it on anything,+ everything I plan to take apart someday for about 40 years now,...
Without problems...
Now,... I don't boat in Saltwater, but the equipment I work on runs some mighty salty roads...

the copper one or the nickel one?

i just did a ABYC class and they said stay away with anything with copper

we leaned this in tech class also

Nope, I call it "Eversieze"

Show me an OEM service manual from anyone that says to use it anywhere on the outdrive, transom shield or anything that gets contact with raw water.
You may find it suggested on some aftermarket manuals but not OEM.
Why, because there are better more approprite products to use in place of eversieze. All that stuff does is makes a mess and makes the DIYer happy. Copper keeps the barnicals off, but doesn't stop corrosion when near aluminum or other metals. Then it's called a battery. the products with zink in them.......... well, they become an anode. Go figure.
On engines, a bit of perfect seal/aviation gasket sealer on bolts prevents corrosion and doesn't make a mess.

Of course, this is just my humble opinion

Thus the comment:

Copper bottom paint should not be on outdrives or transom shields. Thus the 1" rule for copper bottom paint.

Yep... 2 dissimilar metals + an electrolyte (saltwater) makes a battery. 1 metal will be the annode, and accept free electrons, the other metal will be a cathode, and give up free electrons.
The real fun begins when you start mixing lots of metals. The everseize is 1 metal, the aluminum drive is a 2nd, the studs are steel, there's a 3rd metal. If the locknut is a different alloy than the stud, there's a 4th metal.

That's why for threads in saltwater, treating them with a non-metalic sealer (perfectseal) is prefered. Now if your talking trailer lugnuts, I still use marine nickel based eversieze on the studs. There is still an electrical potential difference because the stuff is nickle based and the steel is a dissimilar metal, but the anode/cathode ratings on both metals is so close the result is negligable.

the best antisieze is plain old grease, I found this out the hard way when the former owner of a boat I bought used basic neversieze on the prop shaft. I got it off 3 hours and much profanity later. Even on brake hardware a good synthetic grease will out last antisieze compound
