Okay maybe this is a dumb question, but I can't find an answer. Whay type of antifreeze do you use to winterize the engine? Automotive will be impossible to catch in the summer when I flush out the system. RV fresh water system type???
Thanks

Re: Antifreeze

It's nice to see someone concerned about the environment to not want to dump ethylene glycol into a lake.
I expect you're doing the outboard in the picture? You can't drain it in the spring, on the trailer?
Yes, non toxic RV type anti freeze will work fine, is rated for -50? C.
It just doesn't have the same anti corrosion properties.

Re: Antifreeze

Thanks wire2, no it not for the boat in my Avatar haven't had time to change the picture. It is a Mercruser 120, the RV antifreeze won't corrode the block will it?

Re: Antifreeze

No, RV a-f is mostly ethyl alcohol. It won't promote corrosion.
But you should be able to drain 99% of the a-f from your I/O in the spring, by undoing the block plug(s), manifold plugs, and water pump hose?

Re: Antifreeze

Environmentally friendlier propylene glycol anti freeze is available at most marine supply stores about this time of year, and has some of the corrosion protection in it.
