Hello all. Much time lurking, first time post.

I've started a restoration project on a Johnson JW-10 3HP outboard. I've found carb kits, head gaskets, impellers, etc. already.

Is there any resources to get additional engine/lower unit parts? The cylinder walls are slightly scored and should be honed. When I split the engine case, is there a gasket involved? Can I get engine gaskets/seals? (i.e. lower crankshaft seals, crankcase seals, reed block seals, etc?)

Thx.

You would be surprised at what is still available at any Johnson or Evinrude dealer. That motor was made for many years.

The crankcase is sealed with 3M Scotchgrip #847, replaces Sealer 1000 and Adhesive M.

There are no other crankcase seals or crankshaft seals. Reed plate just uses a common gasket. The gasket on the bottom, around the crankshaft is important not to leak.

A 1952 3hp. They made em long in to the 60's with the same parts. I have the same engine sitting there waiting for some work :)

Anybody have any info regarding piston rings? Mine seem to be fine, but since I'm going to hone out the cylinders, if replacement rings are available, I'll go ahead and put new ones in. Otherwise, I have no choice but to re-use the old ones.

Anyone have an opinion on honing or not??

If you are going to be working on this thing yourself, do yourself a favor and buy a parts book for it. Dealers are much more friendly if you go in armed with a part number. Otherwise most of them won't give you the time of day.

Piston Ring Sets are 378412 (each cylinder). From your Johnson or Evinrude dealer. Yes, you should hone to a crosshatch pattern when replacing rings. And/or replace rings after honing.

F_R--where is a good source for a parts manual for this motor? I found a scanned copy of an owner's manual, but not a parts manual.

Thx.

I have 203152 or 203398 for the rings. Has it been superceded? Pigety, what is your email address, or send me a PM. I have the parts manual in a pdf thanks to WBeaton on this forum.

Samo, that is correct. 203152 superceded by 378412 and 203398 (.020 os) superceded by 378414. The early numbers were for individual rings, the later ones for 1-piston sets.

Samo--I've sent you a pm with my email address.

F_R--do you have a resource that shows the superceded numbers? I'm being a little bit of a pest now so I can be more efficient later.

BTW--I did contact my local John-Rude dealer and the updated standard-size rings are still available. :) If 0.20os rings are available, then I would hope os pistons are as well.

Thanks guys for your help!!
