Ants,Ants & More Ants!!!!!!

[HVAC Cruiser]

Ok, this is boat rebuild and yet not related. My boat the Sea Gem I is infested with ants So bad that on Friday I got bit up while working so bad that my ankles are swollen beyond recognition and I'm having trouble walking I was lying face down on the deck while working in the bilge and they took that as feeding day.

My Question, HOW has anyone else had this problem & how to rid of them. Can I just was the boat or should I get poison tomorrow????

HELP, I am being eaten alive!!!!

EDIT- they are all over the deck form baby ants to adults, its like they started a new colony running all over I see 20 at a time

Toss a tarp over your project and set off an insect fogger bomb. All better...

Had that on the first boat. Set under the trees, in the weeds too long before I bought it.

I covered the boat with tarps, set off a spray bomb and then waited 2 days before hosing it down really good.

Agreed, you gotta get them where they live ... fogging will do that better than anything. Short of that, watch them closely to see where they are going and poison the snot out of that crack area. Tarping and fogging will get a wider area, come back tomorrow and sweep up the dead ants.

I am here on Long Island, all sand the ants run wild. The boat is sitting under trees, grass has grown around the trailer where I can't mow etc..... I am going to Home depot tomorrow morning 7am and getting a fogger/ bomb and will put the snap down cover on it to seal the deal.

I really hope it does the job fast though cause I am about 4 hrs away from being ready to get her wet.
I wanted to finish cleanup tidy up some wiring and my hydraulics to dunk her Thursday

Hi Gonefishie,

Their point of entry is right over the cap, its like they are invading they are all over I was sitting on the ground hooking up the trim piston lines for the drive and they were all over me. I picked up a plastic tray of screws the started running out.... Hummmm... Point of entry as you said good thinking. I will get some Ortho to spray the grounds around the trailer and kill them in their nests too.

You can buy some raid and spay it down which should work or you could mix up some boric acid powder with water and wash the entire boat with it. When it drys little pieces of the boric acid will fill all the cracks and stop the ants. Ants are smart. They leave a trail and the others follow. You got to eliminate the trail with poison.

It says right on the lowes website, kills ants. Probably will work.

A baking soda and icing sugar cocktail does the trick. Ants digestive systems do not give them the ability to pass gas (from either end) they chow down on the mix, take some home to the queen and they all explode together.

You can kill them all you want, you leave that pheromone trail there and those that are left will follow it.

Be careful not to aim the fogger at anything you wish not to be stained or foul smelling for a while. I would recommend a cheap plastic tarp pitched with a pole in the center and draped over the sides. A canvas snap down may never be the same again after fogging. Washing down with some scented solution afterwards should get rid if the residue and smell afterwards on the hard surfaces.

I agree with the cheap tarp use. It might be a bit expensive to have a fogger ruin your cover by staining it.

You guys are right about that I didn't think that far, good looking out. I have a big blue tarp I will use tonight when I do it

I went to Lowes this morning and pucked up a Fogger that is good for ants including carpenter ants. I had a revelation in the store , & am starting to wonder if they are carpenter ants. The boat is sound BUT the genius that built the refrigerator,sink station and the bulkhead for the cuddy did it out of particle board then did a poor formica job over it. the wood is swollen and starting to rot. The thing is I can live with it and fix it as work in progress while I use it to fish

I am REALLY dying to get her wet, and since I took my son fishing off a comm fishing boat last weekend off fire Island he has found a new interest in the boat he too is itching to get out on her. I want to strike while the iron is hot
