I'm going to look at a used 2001 boat with a 2001 Johnson 150 hp outboard. 105 hours on it, sounds like it has excellent care. The price is right.

I know that OMC went away and John/Evin were purchased by Bombardier around that time. I intend to do a water test before buying. Is there anything I should be aware of or concerned with in this series motor?

thanks.

Ski brain, I would be suspect if its a FICHT motor, but I don't think Johnson made them that year, possibly evinrude did. If you can get a compression gauge do a cranking compression check on all 6 cylinders. You shouldn't have greater than 10% difference between them all. Also ask about maintenance. It should have been decarbed and winterized if you are in a colder climate. Also loosen the bottom lower unit screw till a little fluid drips out. makes sure it is not a milky color. Do a visual, does it look like it has been abused? Take the owner out and have him drive it. See how he/she shifts, and operates the motor. Does he let it warm up or does he just gun it? Skibrain many people are suspect of JOHN/RUDE engines, but with the right care they can last a long time. Good luck

Its a carb. motor. I'll check the usual stuff, but just wanted to give the opportunity to have someone chime in and let me know it would be a lemon.

Horrible motors!

Just kidding. I have a 93 150 -- same basic motor. Actually this is not the first one I've had and I think they're great.

I have a buddy who has a 2000 or 01. He doesnt need a throttle, just an "On Off" button. Slow down for a sandbar? No way! Just run the jackplate to the moon, we'll clear! And somebody unplug that annoying buzzer! Maintenance? Who needs it? It ran great 6 months ago.

As mentioned, set up right they'll withstand a lot. They are kinda finiky about spark plugs. They like Champions.

Good luck!
