I am looking at buying a 1990 mauxum. I have read good and bad about the engine. can anyone give me any reason why an 18ft bowrider would only be rated for a 90hp??? Is this a mistake or something I can change legally???

Are you sure that it is only rated for a 90hp? I know that Bayliner always underpowers it's boats, but that is way to small of a motor for an 18' boat. I can almost guarentee that you will be disappointed with the performance especially if you are thinking of skiing behind it. If a 90hp is truly the biggest you can legally put on this boat, run, don't walk from this boat.

Craig

Is there any place online or somwhere I could call to find out what the max engine size would be.

It is somewhat confusing. When you look for it, it seems those boats come in different setups. Most are 90 hp, some are 100 or 125. A few are 135. Newer boats have more power.

The plate on the boat should state this.

Anyway, none of these powerpacks would make an 18 footer much more than an average cruiser.

There should be a sticker on the boat - normally beside the passenger seat. I am willing to bet that boat, and I am familiar with the Maxim, is rated for a 125 or slightly better. If you cannot find a sticker you should be able to find out through a dealer or over the net.

Good Luck
Deerdog

thanks everyone for the info I did end up calling a dealer and they confirmed that a 90 hp was the max. Also they said the boat would cruise in the mid 30's. which is more than enough for pulling a tube. no I wont break any speed records, but it should be enough for a awhile.

I don't know about the boat, but I can tell you from experience that the motor is a #@$%%^ing junker!

Force made the absolute cheapest motors in the world. (Which is why you see so many on Bayliners) Also, I don't know why, but a 90 force has less power than a 90 anything eles.

That is because Force was never rated at the prop. Force is the old Chrysler outboard and was never updated. Mercury has dropped the line last year because it was "Old technology".

Craig
