the bigger the battery the better. You want a deep cycle battery as those are designed to be discharged and recharged. I think you're looking for amp/hours and reserve minutes. FYI, in windy conditions your trolling time will be cut down drastically.

Personally i have a 10ft crawdad with a group31 exide that i use with my 45ft/lb trolling motor, but i also use that battery in the pontoon.

Welcome to iboats. You need to move this to the Electronics and Trolling Motors section. You'll get a lot more input there.

$150 for a trolling motor battery is simply "outrageous".
1) You want a marine/rv "deep cycle"
2) For 5 -6 hours of medium to slow speed trolling you need a group size 27 which is the physical size of the battery.
3) On a deep cycle battery check the numbers where it says RESERVE MINUTES. The larger that number the longer you can run the troller. For a group size 27 a good battery should have 160 - 180 reserve minutes. What that number means is the battery is guaranteed to deliver 23 amps for 160 - 180 minutes (or whatever the label says). 23 amps would be about what the trolling motor would consume from the battery at slightly over 1/2 speed. So at that speed (running continuously) that battery would run the motor for about 3 hours but those numbers are very rough estimates since trollers aren't usually operated continuously for hours at a time. The are generally operated more on an intermittent or very slow speed so run time may be much longer (or much shorter) depending on how you fish.
4) If you are in an area where there are "farm stores" (we call them Fleet Farm or Farm and Fleet where I live) their prices are half what you quoted. I recently bought a group 27 for $76 which was NOT a sale price. That same battery can be had on-sale at the same store for $67 when on sale.

For trolling ONLY you don't want a battery designed to also crank a motor. You can get true deep cycle batteries that will better serve your needs. Deep cycle battery construction is not identical to a cranker. I've read more than once that a dual purpose marine battery does neither job well.

More lead means more RC/AH. The heavier the battery the more time on the water you'll get out of it.

Boondockers often use golf cart batteries (they come in 6, 12, 24 and 36 volt configurations). They are designed to take sudden short surges and then rest. I was told this by a EE .

You can go cheap and get Walmart or Costco deep cycle batterys. Some people swear at them, others swear by them. If you go with higher quality (like Trojan) and pay more, you'll also be paying for a longer warranty.

I'd avoid the AGM batteries unless you have a real need for them. They have some wonderful features but are expensive and don't have the capacity of lead acid batteries.

While your at it, get a good battery maintainer that has at least 3 stages. They will keep a 'float' charge on your battery, it will always be fresh and ready to use. I just bought one for my pontoon from Overtons for $29.00.

Good luck!
