Any of you have any luck yet with the archery deer season if open in your area.

This is the first year that i am hunting with my recurve bow. Decided to put the mathews down for a while, and try my luck with the recurve, but to no avail. :(

oct 1
No deer seen
oct 2
not able to hunt
oct 3
2 deer seen 50 yards(my max range is 17yards)
oct 4
no deer seen (couple thousand skeeters though)
oct 5
5 in morning and 12 in afternoon
(2 nice shooter bucks 3 smalller bucks)

I am ready for the cooler weather. trying to get a deer in close enuff to shoot, while trying to not get eatin alive by the skeeters, is a tough task. will try the recurve till primitive season, then i will have to get the compound out again.

but just wondering bout others and thier luck

Re: Any archery hunters have any luck?

I'v been out several times and had one doe within bout 8yds but didn't get a shot before she busted me. Had 2 does and one buck (diffrent nights) in the 30 yds area but so far no shots. several nights with nothing also. It is only my second year with a bow I tried a compound but enjoy the simplicity of my recurve. Sure I dont have the range but I really enjoy it. Come rifle season then I get real serious but till then I mainly enjoy the hunt and HOPE to eventually get one with bow.

Season is three weeks old already, seen 6 does and a forkhorn buck. Passed on a sow bear, she had a couple cubs with her. Still haven't had anything within 30 yards though. Mosquitoes have finally been killed by the frost though!

Re: Any archery hunters have any luck?

Tonight I went out set up and had a doe come in from an unexpected direction. At about 11 yds as she crossed between some brush I drew, she made a couple more steps and stopped with her head looking around a tree as I waited for that next step that never came I started to Quiver. Long story short trying to hold the recurve at full draw cost me this deer. I can hold a compound with lettoff for a considerable time but a recurve is harder to hold. Would I be better served to wait motionless untill she cleared for a shot then hope she dont bolt on the draw or is this the way its supposed to be done.

I'm at a loss here, what to you traditional guys do. I dont know if it makes any diffrence but I do most of my hunting from the ground. And although this is only my second year hunting with bow this is also the second deer I have lost this way. I would eventually like to get one. Come on fellows tell a self taught bow hunter how you do it.

Nice white tail.
No time for bow hunting. Season is short here, I
like to take a general white tail every year so
I can make jerky.Bow hunting is definitely more
of a challenge, and so a successful hunt is less
likely. I'll stick with my long rifle.
However we do have some of the largest white tail
and mule deer on the planet between here and
Saskatchewan.

Neumann's do yourself a favor and hunt from a tree stand.
Yesterday I had a 4 point walk up to the stand at 700:am, beautiful deer, he was nice dark brown color. Then a young hen turkey gave me a nice show yelping and clucking for a good 45 minutes nonstop trying to drum up some company.
Had two yearling's bed down at 30 yards from the stand. Did not get a deer but what a great day mother nature provided me.

Re: Any archery hunters have any luck?

Neumanns, don't let them air hunters tell ya differently, keep hunting from the ground, it is a shorter fall that way!

As for when to draw, that is decided upon on each circumstance. Just remember that with a traditional bow you will not be able to hold a full draw very long, so make you move swiftly and smoothly.

Oh, and it won't matter what you decide to do, draw and wait or quick pull and shoot, it will be the wrong decision! That is just the way it goes.

Re: Any archery hunters have any luck?

Flathead...I own several portable stands, & have acess to several permanant stands. For years this was the only way I hunted, but then...I have found I really like to still hunt and set up on promising trails with a hide. I carry a garden pruner and trim a little interferance and tuck myself away. I really enjoy the mobility . Also one piece I huntdoes not have enoufgh Archery friendly large trees left, But it is a great piece to hunt.

Aspeck...Man I think you are right. Guess I'll have to try the next one with draw & shoot, see if I can miss one that way also.

The good news is I scored another property to hunt yesturday. (Archery only) Guess you can never have to many options.

Re: Any archery hunters have any luck?

Managed to tag a 4X4 mulie last week. Have managed my share of whitetails in the past but mulies have evaded me for 20 years (a week in western ND every year for the past 20). Until now. problem is now I'm done. Miss it already :( :( :( :( :( :( :(

I went, saw a good buck 80yrds off, with 4 doe. Llano Texas. Had a doe in the kill zone drew back for 1 minute, waiting for the shot. got the shakes, had to calm down...... when I drew down another doe spotted me in my ground blind from less than 10 yds behind. never saw her.I screwed up.... shouldve taken the shot.

Re: Any archery hunters have any luck?

Killed my first deer with my recurve bow. have killed many with compound, but tried the recurve this year. was a small 5pointer, one side broken off. Very excited about it. missed it at 8 yards, then it gave me a second chance at 22, did not miss twice. ran about 100 yards and then expired. will try an post pics when i get them developed. :D :D :D
