Any auto exhaust pros? Question...

I had new exhaust put on my Tahoe and i'm not pleased.
It sounds fine until it warms up then it sounds like a helicopter on acceleration I had high flow dual system run on it. The mufflers are a straight thru performance type. I noticed before they welded the tail pipes on that the little clam shell looking baffles are turned to the front or intake side of the muffler.It has a good deep sound except for the spitting or ticking sound.
I looked under it with it running and no leaks.
Anyone know what way those baffles should go? I got a feeling they were put on backwards.There is no directional markings on them..
The guy who put them on is out of town all week and with the attitude he had the other day i doubt he will be willing to do anything.
Should have stuck to Flowmasters like i had before..

I put duals on me ole dodge, 2.5" there are no baffles in it anywhere. The *muflers* are just a swelled place in the pipe, no glass they do have a piece of expaned metal rolled up inside. It was so loud my nieghbor told my she new it was me coming because it shook her floor. pulled the moter to fix some oil leaks along with timing chain and gears, lifters etc. Now it is not that loud, nice deep rumble, I can hear the radio but I think I can hear the valves closing through the exhaust!
Flow master is still a good product if they are glass packed they will burn in and sound differant, maybe do a road trip and run it all day on the highway.

As for that baffle, I have no idea mine came with a note that said this way for quiet this way for loud I put them on the quiet way but looking through the things I did not see a dif maybe go to flowmastermufflers.com and email them bet they dont want there product installed wrong!

Thanks Rwise,The baffles are like little clam shell scoops in a spiral pattern inside the muffler.The direction they are in now it scoops the exhaust,if they were turned around it would flow over them.
The muffler shop was out of stock on the Flowmasters so mine are some other brand.I may just have to pay them all over again and have the Flows ordered.
I towed the boat 120 miles with them and it really sounds bad with a load on the engine.Its like the hotter they get the more the ticking like sound is.
Sounds kind of like a leaking manifold but its not..
For the 500 i paid i hope they will work with me..

Hopefully they will fix it for you but if you do decide to have it redone theres a place in Lexington, NC where everyone around here gets flow's installed. They have flowmasters in stock, have been in business forever and i've never heard of a complaint regarding them.

Wait, Gary, I have a lot of "back yard" experience with mufflers, apparently you got "Red Hots" brand of glasspacks or something similar, yes the little 1/2 moon shaped baffles are supposed to be facing the front (the motor) to baffle, but I don't like the sound of them, personally. Yes, they are very restrictive for a straight thru muffler! I don't know how they'd sound reversed? but it kinda defeats the purpose of them, they might get much louder in an odd way?. I found the best sounding glasspacks are Dynomax Bullets, they just have a perforated core, that flows the same either direction, Dynomax also makes red glasspacks that are made the same way, neither of these have the odd sounding 1/2 moon baffles. Tell me your setup,(vehicle specs) and I'll make a suggestion.

(clamshell scoops) This was the first type of glasspack I tried, many years ago, it made my car sound like crap. I see you have a Tahoe, probably a 350Chevy motor, I'd suggest a Dynomax Ultraflow, it is a straight thru rectangular (ordinary looking) fiberglass packed muffler, that has a free flowing perforated core, it will give you a nice slight rap, & some rumble, a little better then stock, If you want a bit louder, goto a Dynomax Bullet (round style) glasspack with the same core, or the Dynomax red glasspacks.

A Flowmaster 40, (old original style) will sound nice, and give you a bit more roar, but less rap (not being straight thru), but also some drone at highway speeds (not so with the Dynomax Ultra). The new Flow Super 40's are deeper sounding, designed for less drone, but I think they sound artificially deep, and the Flow Delta 40's sound the best to me, a little like the original 40 but not as loud or with as much drone. The Flow 50's (3 chamber) are the quietest of all, but they still produce a nice rumble

If you happen to prefer the sound of Flowmasters, the Delta 40 is my choice, but I prefer the Dynomax Ultraflow, or Bullets.

Finally, if you're not running cats, the Flow's will probably be too loud, and maybe any glasspack also, but The Dynomax Ultra's should be fine either way , and if you want the most, aggressive, but great sound, go for Spintechs! but again not without a cat.

You might take a chance, and just get those glasspacks reversed, they will get a bit more of a bark, with less roar, but reduce the backpressure, so shouldn't rap down when you come off the gas, maybe advantageous?
Flows orig 40's are old hat, all they do is roar in varing degrees, and drone because they're a chambered muffler, they sound "truckish", if that's what you're looking for. Dynomax Ultraflows don't roar as much, they give you a nice mild cushioned tuned bark, like an old musclecar.

I'm sure they could swap the mufflers if the original shop won't and it shouldn't cost you an arm and a leg. The pipe is already there and bent it should be an easy changeover.

Still it sucks to have to pay someone else money because you are dis-satisfied with the product you purchased. Bug the shop that put them on hopefully they will take care of you!

Well,took it back to the exhaust shop....the guy was a total a**...
He walked out and heard it at idle and said its a miss in the engine!
NO WAY!! Truck runs as smooth as silk at all speeds.
I tried to be really nice about the whole deal and told him i would pay him to reverse the mufflers to see how that sounded.He said he would not touch it until i had a friend of his down the road at a repair shop check the engine on a diagnostic machine.
I pointed out that both sides had the same spitting sound so it would have to be a cylinder missfire on both sides.He walked back into his office and i drove off...
So i guess its pay his friend to find a non existing problem and then pay him to work on the exhaust again.What a rip off...
I found the Flows online for 140 a pair including shipping.I may just buy them and get another shop to weld them on...
Heck of it is this exhaust guy is supposed to be the best around and gets all the work from a very high end custom hot rod shop..

Gary, So sorry you were dealing with an a'hole, but I really think you may like them reversed,,, There's been guys on the Chevy truck forum that did exactly that, and were very happy, but whatever. I have a Flow 40 orig on my 96' GMC Sonoma 4.3 V6 (S-10 style) pickup, and it sounded great in the beginning, then after break in, got more of a Roar then anything else, along with a little hwy, & towing Drone. I'm looking to change it out to an 18" long Dynomax Bullet, to get rid of the (Flows open can roar, & drone), once I get my act together. Too busy now trying to catch the last licks of summer in Pa. with my boat, & jetski ,,, either way, Good Luck, Mike

By the way, my stepson is in Charlotte NC, south near lake Wylie, we're going down to visit in a coupla weeks. Wait, I see you're a NASCAR team member, his girlfriends Uncle is also on a NASCAR team!

I did call the guy at the auto shop,He had me come by and put the truck on the computer for free.Come to find out he is good friends with my neighbor.
He was a nice guy,to bad the exhaust guy doesn't act like that.Anyway the computer shows a miss under load on the #5 cylinder.Strange i can't feel it.
So i stopped and bought news cap,rotor,wires and plugs.
He told me after the tune up to run it by and he would retest on the computer.
He said he knows the exhaust guy is hard to deal with.

I hope when you come down they will have some water in lake Wylie...
If not get in touch,my usual lake is the only one around here thats full...
I'm due for some night time crappie and white bass fishing..
