Any benefit to using newer electronics

I have a 78 150 crossflow and was wondering if there was any benefit to using newer electronics. I have a complete set of electronics from an 89 motor. I know the 89 stuff is one power pack but are there any real benefits to the newer stuff or would it just be a waste of time. My motor runs fine now but if a powerpack goes bad I would like to try the newer stuff

I wouldn't try this if I were you. If the motor is running good don't mess with it.

What motor is the 89?

It was an 89 150 tracker. I have everything from the connector foward. My 78 has already been converted to primer choke already so that is the same

Yes, you can use the complete electrical and ignition. If youre going to use any part of the 89, use it all. Harness, components -- everything. It'll work fine.

Is it any better than the 78 stuff or just the same in different config?

I have my tilt trim using a 2 wire motor already I wired it with two relays but I see I can use the relay box on this setup.

Yep, same result - different package. I'm sure the engineers felt the new packaging will stand up better. Probably cost them less too. But, if you keep exactly the same components year after year, why would you need engineers?

That being said -- we did see some problems with the old packs (with the screw on cover) where the circuit shorted to the cover and the motor wouldnt run right or maybe even start. But if it was right we didnt see any difference.

Thanks I will hold on to the stuff in case of a problem.

My 150 is still running good I have decarbed twice this season. About 115 hours on it since we tried to fix the rpm problem. No loss in power and same plugs with no carbon buildup. I guess it had to do with the porosity problem with the block that you ran into before. 5000 rpm and no more I pulled the bypass covers about 20 hours ago and there is no carbon buildup in the ring lands either.
