Any Bubble Chasers?

Need info on hydaulic fluid. My Versalift bucket truck is low on fluid. Looking at the manual it says a Mil spec #H5606. In my days of the navy, I was familiar to this reddish color fluid. <br /><br />What is existing in my system is not reddish color, but looks the color of a regular motor oil. However it does not smell like motor oil.<br /><br />I can't find any hydraulic oil that is not red. I'm hesitant to mix the two for the compatibility.<br /><br />I don't want to change my fluid yet since it has a resivoir of 35 gallons.<br /><br />Any suggestions if it is okay or not?

I bought 5 galons of multi purpose hydraulic fluid at sam's club and it is the same color as motor oil. I don't dare use it in my allis h4 dozer because I,ve been using ATF and this stuff from sam's is heavier. Maybe Lubedude can help us out.

i just had the fluid in my bucket changed i'll find out what it is tomarrow and let ya know if ya don't have a answer by then it to is not red

SS,<br />Mil H5606 is an Aircraft oil<br />Mobil AERO HFA<br />Texaco HO15<br />Chevron Aviation Fluid A<br /><br />Sounds like a -15 weight oil to me but has probably got some very expensive additive package for aviation use.<br />There is prob no good reason why you can't use regular 15 hyd oil.<br />Prob cheaper to drain & flush entire system that to buy a 'top-up' qty.<br /><br />It is compatible with ATF in emergency.<br /><br />You figure that out?<br /><br />Regards<br /><br />Peter

Thanks guys, A friend of mine has a rollback that uses hydraulic fluid. He brought by some this afternoon.<br /><br />Peterf, I knew that 5606 was red from working on aircraft in the Navy. That is why I was confused about the manual saying that it could be used. So when I looked at my existing fluid and it was sorta clear I was baffled. To read on further in the manual, it says 5606 can be used only in temps under 80 degree F and that it is good to use in temps down to minus 80F. So the 15 weight is okay to use. <br /><br />Filled it back up and now it is working fine again. I just need to get off my butt and fix a fitting that has a small leak.

SS<br /><br />Seeing how you dont work up in the arctic circle very often you reckon you'll get away with this one eh??<br /><br />Prob find also that 5606 wont absorb water because of the temp range as well.<br /><br />Good luck with your oil supply.<br />I would expect that most hyd fluids will work ok either SAE 15 or ISO 46 or even 68.<br />Both have good anti foam and anti rust additives.<br />Best fix that leak now, You dont want the greenies on your case coz youre spiling oil do you.<br /><br />Regards<br /><br />Peter
