Well, it looks as if I will be approved for some land. I am buying 36 acres that is half pasture/half wooded. It has several small creeks on it that will supply water for a pond or two. It has good grass so the horses will be happy. This is the kind of place that both my wife and I have always wanted. I am hoping that in about 4-5 years to build a house on it. We own the house we have now outright so we are thinking a shell style may help us in the money situation. Does anyone have experiance with log homes? There is a company in Longview (Satterwhite) which is about 2 hours from me. I'm just looking for ideas/opinions, good or bad, on this venture. Tell it like you see it. Satterwhite Log Homes

I'll tell you my experience with log homes based on my profession, an exterminator. Log homes settle as they age, and cracks/gaps develop. You have to stay on top of chinking to keep the gaps sealed, otherwise you have every bug in the country in your house. A lot of pests are attracted to log homes for obvious reasons. Machined log homes are better about the seal issues since the logs fit precisely. I personally like log homes, and would probably own one, but they are more work than a stick-framed home.

Thanks Jason. Thses logs are machined with 2 tongue and grooves on top and bottom. They are supposed to be from a dead forest and are aged at least 40 years to help reduce the shrinkage type problems, at least thats what that tell us.

I have helped build 2 of them but couldn't tell ya much beyond that. Most people seem to prefer a larger log, those look to be 8 or 9 inchers. As for there building system and package deal they look fairly standard. Good luck.

We have been in our log home now about 11 years. I had a builder put up the shell and roof and I finished it myself. No regrets yet. The logs are white cedar tonge and groove. Only drawback is the great room has a 35 ft ceiling, even with fans in the heat rises up in the winter and that room is always chilly. Only other chore is it has to be restained about every 6 years, due that it is in direct sunlite all the time. email me if you have any questions at viraglogs@aol.com

My wife and I have been researching log homes for the past 6 months. The land we were gonna get (6 acres with stream) was sold to us and another person at the same time by a jerk but anyways. I was going to do it all myself. One day I will get one up.
