Don't believe the 100,000 spark plug story. With the current mileage I would recommend a tune up, which includes replace fuel filter. Clean the throttle bore and plate of carbon deposits. In my opinion the idea of 100,000 mile plugs is a way to convince you to buy the vehicle...As in, look you can buy this and never have to spend any more money on maintanence.

Eh, I dunno, L'Dude. My '97 E150 went to 102k miles before it started dropin a cylinder, under load in OD. Up until that time it ran like a swiss watch and still did under normal acceleration and cruise.

Now I have 80k on the second set, using one quart of AMSOIL 0w-30 every 4500 mi and those plugs are not missin a beat.

I never thought it was possible either. Our 99 Montana has 129000 and its still on the original plugs.

Those hundred thousand mile spark plugs are even
better than you are led to believe.
These plugs fire on the power stroke and the
exhaust stroke. Making them fire twice as many
times in a hundred thousand miles.

Fuel filter and air filter were changed out sometime with in the last 10,000 miles by the Ford dealer.

Not getting any warning lights. Just a little sluggish starting lately on damp mornings.
Guess I'll have to get the CDROM out and check out the boot thing JimR.

Not according to my Ford mechanic freind that works for the local Ford dealership, he says for proper and better performance to change them at about 75,000.

Eh, whadya expect them to say, L'Dude. There starvin out de, wit dees 100K interval tune ups. But I must say, they have ways to make up for it. I just had to replace the rubber connector (about 8" long) between my filler neck and the gas tank snout. It would pour out gasoline between the fuel tank and the frame rail, every time I filled it up. Also the 'check engine' light was on due to a breach in the fuel system.

The hose cost $86.00 (probably $10-15 at Napa), they wanted $120.00 to diagnose it. I refused to pay it. (settled for $60.) and $80 to install it. Add it up. $230.00 + tax to replace an 8" filler hose and to reset the check engine lite. Grrrrr

The price we must pay when we can't crawl under our own vehicle. My 2.25 ton jack won't even lift my overloaded E150 off the ground.

The sparkplugs last 100K easily. But the filters, fuel and air, have a hard time doing it.

Boomyal we are 99.00 perhour for labour here in
Calgary. Its a very expensive visit for even a
minor repair.
Skinny you are right their is more to a tuneup
than just replacing plugs.
KaGee you may have more of a problem than just
plugs, but that may not be such a bad place to
start, as they should be replaced at 100,000 miles
anyway.

Try dumping a bottle or two of fuel injector cleaner in your gas tank. I've done it when my cars are idling a bit ruff and I think it helps.

Besides, its a Ford. Your lucky the thing is still running.

Re: Any Ford Techs out there?

The reason plugs last 100,000 now is that the lead is gone, the voltage is WAY up, and the materials are superior to the old daze
