All this controversy :D I thought I'd try a topic on a lighter note: Only one thing I enjoy more than being on the water, and that's being on the links. Anyone else into the sport? Handicap? "Weapons" of choice? Favorite course?

Primarily, I use Callaway and Ping, but my bag's got all kinds of specialty "tools" in it, both name brand and otherwise... about a 12 hdcp.

Re: Any Golfers?

moose- You and I would be a great match...maybe? I dont usually play on very hard courses. So my 12-13 handicap may be a 20 on your course. I use old ping irons and when I "have to" use calloway old steel berthas for 1/3 woods. I am mainly a 3 iron off the tee (ave. 235-240) but I am almost always in the fairway... wimpy but I get to play w/o frustration. shhhh....my favorite putter is a walmart special and I love it! :p
Best course I have played would be Harbor Town in Hilton Head, SC. Played it once on vacation and since it is a PGA course, I would have to say its the best course. BUt My favorite is a course on "defeuskey" (sp?)island off hilton head that has much better views and scenery. IT was breathtaking. nice to have a "nonflammable" topic to shoot the bull about...

My golf experience ends at the driving range... Great way to take out frustration...

My son plays, took me with him one time, told me afterwards my best club would be a 12 gauge. ;)

Moose ,I too am a helplessly addicted golfer.10 years ago I had absolutely no interest in the game.Started about 6 years ago and quickly developed a 3 round a week habit.Down to around one a week now, with therapy.Municipal rates make it a bit easier on the wallet.South texas weather allows 4 seasons of bad words with no extra charge for wind. Wilson blades,Taylor driver,8 handicap.

Re: Any Golfers?

Beaux,
My handicap varies from course to course as well :( The course at which I'm a member, is very flat, no sand, but the fairways are thickly lined with 80' Cottonwoods and water comes into play on 12 of the 18 holes. Where it lacks, it more than makes up for it elsewhere! The course was carved out of the trees in the Missouri river flood plain, if that gives you any idea. Huge, perfect greens, plush fairways and 430.00/year is why I chose here. I putt with an old crusty "Nomad" putter. I keep the putter booty on it all the time so I don't spoil the look of what else is in the bag. I used a Scotty Cameron putter for a while, but it just didn't roll like the old Nomad that I've had for 20 years. I've played at the Dakota Dunes Country Club which is near here. It's a stop for the buy.com tour. My "passion" is to play Pebble Beach one day :D

ob,
Blades! I'm impressed! My handicap using blades would be significantly diferent, I'm sure. I plan to go with blades eventually... maybe after my first sub-par round. I use Ping ISI-K for 3-SW, Ping ISI 2 iron, Cleveland AW and a Diamond Spin LW. The ISI-K's are more forgiving than well... this board :D I use a Big Bertha Hawkeye 7 degree driver which has a sweet spot as big as a house... great for breathtaking oohs and ahhs when it's straight; many simpathies when it isn't(which is more often than I'd like to admit). I mainly use my 3W (Cally Steelhead) off the tee. 30 yards shorter than the big dog, without all the side effects.

I live for the "emotional rollercoaster" that is GOLF. Golf is a funny sport. Any guy can slap on a captain's hat and grab the wheel of a boat and really look like he's the king of the sea... but I've yet to see anyone who doesn't look like a moron at some point or another on a golf course. Where else can you take one shot that gives you a chill, you twirl your club, smiling from ear to ear, pick up your tee while watching the ball's beautiful flight, perfect draw, 300 yards, splitting the fairway down the center; Strutting to your now, only 100 yard approach, like you just saved the planet from nuclear holocaust, you follow up by missing the spot you wished to hit on the ball by 1/2", blading it, sending a line drive over the green and nearly killing the people on the next tee box(true story,by the way - more than once! ).

In a normal round of golf, I hit 40 shots that Tiger himself would love to hit... it the other 40-50 strokes it that keep me coming back for more :D

~ helplessly addicted ~

Re: Any Golfers?

Try disc golf instead of stick ball golf. Fast, free, same object of the game. Been playing for many years and am pretty good at it. A big plus is that you don't have to put up with cranky old men and Tiger wannabees...just alot of fun to be had.

Well said Moose Miller,Your description of the game and what keeps you coming back for more is on the spot.Particularly sculling the 100 yd approach shot through the green after a tour winning drive. It sounds like a sick disease for someone that doesn't love the game ,but golf ,good or bad day,is like the buddy that never lets you down.It always feels like a new adventure on the first tee.

Re: Any Golfers?

moose- sounds like your course is great... I am not a member anywhere down here as I tend to like to play different spots and almost every course down here is semi-private but allows guests. If you or OB ever come down to the coast for gambling/fishing/both..i suggest staying at the grand gulfport as you can get a golf package at the Grand Bear (nicholas course) IF you stay at their hotel.(only way you can get a tee time) It is beautiful......$$$ but worth it.
I started playing about 10 yrs ago in school at a municipal course that has a student rate of $13.00/month.....cant beat that with a stick! needless to say i drank more beers than hit straight shots in the beginning, but developed a passion for it.... still hooked! (actually its a fade ;) )

Re: Any Golfers?

Grew up on the Pine Needles course between Pinehurst and Southern Pines. Caddied for Julius Boros and others. Thought I was terrible until I played ordinary human beings (high school team).

Still have a terrible inferiority complex when it comes to golf, haven't played in years.

Son plays with 5 handicap.
