I am a rookie so let's get that out of the way. Anyways, I am bogging down upon accelerating then get shut down. I know I should rebuild the carb but I am reading that you can adjust the accelerator pump. I'd like to try this but cannot locate how to do it. Any help?
thank you.

An Alpha I Gen II is an outdrive and doesn't have an accelerator pump, what engine and carb do you have?

Hey guys hope you are having a nice day!

I have a 3.0lx Alpha One. Two Barrel carb... guessing "mercarb"? I located the idle screw and the mixture screw just now. It was hard to get my big head back there but I did see what I perceive to be that accelerator pump thing. If it's what I think it is, it has an adjustable feature with three holes on the lever. Mine is set to the center hole if that helps. Anyways, I'm bogging down at any speed which results in the engine shutting down. Hoping this can be a minor tweak. This boat sat for 5 years so I'm not ruling out needing to rebuild this thing.
Thanks.

pull the spark arrestor off, and with the engine off - have a look while someone is actuating the throttle from the helm. you should see two streams of fuel spray down in the carb throat.

However I think you already know the answer. it sounds like your accelerator pump is not working at all. that would be a tear the carb down and rebuild it. could be plugged passages, could be bad diaphragm.

Here is some information about the pump adjustment. But if the passages are plugged up or the pump is defective, then it won't help much.

I just went through this same issue earlier this year. I did have the 2 streams of fuel when throttle was actuated. Checked EVERYTHING in the fuel system..i.e. filters, hoses, anti siphon, etc. etc. Don't waste time...just rebuild the carb. I did mune and it worked great right out of the chute. Sitting for 5 years, I'm sure all the little passages in the venturi are clogged, as well as the jets. Did I mention...rebuild the carb.

And make sure the power valve is operating properly.

thanks to everyone in this thread! So i'm watching a mercarb rebuild video> http://carburetor-blog.com/?page_id=390

I am a bit tenative about taking this on. Any encouragement? I did the bellows recently on my boat so I was able to overcome that kind of beast but this just has a bunch of features that I can see myself missing a key and small aspect. If you think it's easier than I am making it let me know. If it's a daunting task, let me know that as well.
If I have to bail and take my carb somewhere, how much is the rebuild typically if I provide the kit?
thanks again.

Just do it!

I never rebuitlt a carb before, but I did mine...from Mike's. Just take your time and be meticulous about cleaning and measurements and you should do fine...if you are mechanically inclined. Take alot of pictures as you are disassembling it. Mike's instructional video is awesome and gave me the confidence to do the rebuild myself. I'd be more concerned about replacing the bellows...but thats just me. Someday, I may have to attempt that project, but hopefully not soon, since mine was replaced in June of 2010.

My carb did not have the little parts at the bottom of the accelerator pump well that he shows. Made it a little easier. I believe they modified the carb and those parts were designed out of the system.

BTW, My boat mechanic said he would charge me $325 for the rebuild, which was not too bad. But then I would have to remove it from the lake, haul it 1/2 hr to his shop...then go pick it up. Would have cost me over $400 all tolled with gas for the truck and all. Plus my time to transport the boat back and forth. Problem was, he couldn't get to it for 3 weeks. That was 3 weeks that I was not willing to wait in the middle of boating season, so I took on the job myself. Got the part on Friday and it was back in the boat on Saturday afternoon. I was not one bit sorry...and saved myself at least $250 in the process. I got the kit, new float, 1 gal carb cleaner from NAPA (for soaking parts) and other sundries that I needed. Get the new float too...only $10 more.

well ok then! I just ordered the kit. Hoping this works out well. I'll head out and get myself some carb cleaner.. how long do you soak? Is the float necessary or can I sake by on that?
Thanks a ton by the way.

Let me know if you have any questions while rebuilding. Did you do the UPS 2 day shipping? That's what I did. Also, make sure you have a wide blade screwdriver. Blade needs to be 1/4" wide...you dont want to strip any of the screws trying to get them out...especially the jets, since you do not get new ones in the rebuild kit. Use alot of PB Blaster to loosen screws before attempting. Also, my power valve vacuum piston was not really sticking, so I did not remove it. I just repeatedly sprayed carb cleaner and PB Blaster in it and worked it until it was ultra smooth. If you do decide it needs to come out, be very careful. Break it and you get to buy a new carb...like Mike says. You cant get a replacement part cause they dont make it.

If I remember correctly, I soaked most of the parts for 4 hours or more...especially the venturi cluster and the jets. (just the name of that frightened me before I ordered my kit) Use compressed air to blow off/out the parts after soaking. Hold on to them tightly when doing so.

Replace the float...I did. Ordered it from mikes when ordering the kit. It would suck if you rebuilt and then had to take it apart again to replace the float just to save $10.

Two other things...my carb only separated into 2 sections...not 3 like his video shows. Also, I did not take out the shaft of the throttle body with the small screws that have a tendency to break. I didnt have any corrosion at that location.
