Any ideas on a sticking manual trim piston?

My 1991 Evinrude 48 SPL manual trim wants to stick in different positions. I can loosen the piston and free it temporarily, but it keeps getting locked up. Any ideas on what I can do?

Are you talking about the tilt cylinder? By loosening the piston, are you talking about the bolts on the tilt cylinder? There are bushings on the top and bottom of the tilt cylinder that can be replaced.

I am talking about the locking lever cable that connects to the piston to hold the engine in place. I can loosen it at the connection, but can't disconnect it.
