Any ideas why it Blew.

WOT down a canal on the way back from a days fishing, then "pop,boom,blah,blam,crack,conk." This was the sound of my 1976 85hp last day running. This motor was in excellent condition and well maintained. The number 2 cylinders rod cracked in half then rotated 360 cutting up the power head, starter, power pack, and carburator.(It was a big pile of pieces under the cover) I have the power head down, but have not examined it to see exactly what happened. I was running Amsoil Saber Synthetic mixed 100:1 the day it blew. Any thoughts on what could have been the cause? Not enough lubrication? Old age stress?

It should have been run at 50:1 so it could have been lube. It sounds like the roller bearing between the #2 rod and the crankshaft siezed up. It could be caused by many things like defective parts, lack of lube, or a pre-existing knock. Sorry to hear about it. I lost my favourite engine from the same bearing failing on #3 cyl.<br />Eric

100 to 1 simply don't leave enough lube to protect the bearings from rust as the engine is at rest

Package the powerhead up and send it to Amsoil, if it was oil related, they will pay for the repairs. They will at least give you an Idea as to what happened and they wont charge you. Call them and get proper shipping instructions.<br /><br />I doubt it was an oil problem, but I may be the only one that will stick behind the product.

I suspect it could have been caused by a plethora of things in a 29 year old engine, and you'll probably never know which one.

100:1 with an ordinary TC-W3 oil, yes. <br />100:1 with Amsoil Saber outboard oil, BS.

I have ran this motor numerous times with the 100:1 mixture and never had a problem, it actually ran better with Amsoil original synthetic 100:1.<br />My first thought was lack of lubrication, but I don't think that was the problem. Nice to here the opinions, I might go ahead and inspect it.<br /><br />I have a 90hp "Tower of Power" almost ready to go. Just to be sure Quicksilver mixed 50:1 from now on.

Yall reduced me to tears, my 85 BlueBan ran like a top and got me to every fishing hole in Southern Louisiana. Now everything is going down hill. Just hope this 90 inline can fill some of the sorrow. My boat is a 1976 15ft Hydra-sport (hydra-flight) so this 1977 90hp will be crazy, hopefully.

LubeDude, in reply to your BS remark, just one reply I am not the Oil Doc and not going to go on and on with you about oil it serve no purpose, we all have our favorite products, I am not going to **** mine. I have drawen my thoughts from engines that I have repaired or have knowledge of, some 800/850 Mercurys that didn't idle on 100 to 1 amsoil, a freind that is a amsoil dealer that races D stock runabout, when he changed his 55H to amsoil he lost 3 upper main bearing in 1 season, thats more than you should go bad in 10 years, the following year he went back to his old oil and had no failures, I certainly am not a oil expert, but then neither are you, you a a oil salesman nothing more nothing less, you and others use this forum to try to sell products that is not what this forum about---Bob

I realize that, and do not intend to start any kind of a war with you. I realize you know what you are talking about.<br /><br />In reply to your freind, who is an amsoil dealer, if he was mixing at 100:1 and racing, he wasnt following Amsoils advice. If he was mixing at richer ratios, then thats strange because Amsoil was sponsoring outboard racing back then as they are today.<br /><br />Even though I will stand behind mixing at 100:1 under normal use, When I used the original 100:1 I mixed at about 80:1 in my 85 Evenrude. It just stands to reason that if you are ringing the thing out all the time to use a bit more oil.<br /><br />I still think they should just drop the whole 100:1 thing.<br /><br />And by the way, Im NOT an oil salesman! When have you seen me sell oil here????? If I thought that Pennzoil was the holy grail, I would be pushing it. I just think that products like Amsoil and Klotz are way ahead of the others, therefore my loyalty.

I've been using Pennzoil in my cars for 54 years, starting with my 46 ford. Never threw a bearing or blown an engine. Has nothing to do with this thread but just felt like saying something. <br /><br />Jerry
