Striper,
In my opinion
these were very good engines, of course it all depends on how well it has been maintained, and how good the compression,spark and lower unit is now. If all that was good I wouldn't hesitate to buy it if the price was right.

ARA, thank you tons I'm trying to get the lo down on the power plant. They want 8 grand for the whole rig (it's a 20' overnighter) and I know the hull is in exquisit shape,the power plant has some oil residue in the compartment which I would think would be normal for a 2 stroke.My main concern is would it be worthy to have the powerhead
rebuilt??? and what should I look for???

Hi Striper;
Yes I think that the engine would be well worth while to rebuild especially if this is the first overhaul, however I wouldn't overhaul it unless it needed it. (If it ain't broke don't fix it) Check the compression and spark, spark should jump a 1/2" gap and the compression shouldn't vary more than 15 lbs. between cyls.
Good luck, By the way Golden Precision Marine in Eagle Rock, MO. has short blocks for that I think for around 2K

Those old V6's ran very well but burn more fuel than the later more efficient models. Make sure that 19 year old motor is checked over thoroughly by a QUALIFIED tech. On an engine that old, pay close attention to the insulation and wiring condition.

Thanks alot LC I'll probably take you up on that. I did find out that the broker was wrong it is an 85 was rebuilt in oct and still has a year warranty on it from the rebuilder which I'm sure will be up in oct. Goin to make an offer on it tomorrow.

Striper,
The Manual and parts book I have covers only the V6 motors so I don't think it would be much good to you.

Anyone want a OMC Sevice Manual and two Parts Catalogs for all Evenrude or Johnson V6 150 to 235 motors.
They are gathering dust in my den and I would gladly give them to a good home.
If you get back to me today or tomorrow I can post them on Saturday when I pass through Chicago Airport.
Peter
