Re: Any information on the Engine for "1986 21' Galaxy"
i have a trashed 1996 tahoe with a vortec 5.7l V8 i could throw a carb on if it would bolt up, but like i said i need more information.. thanks again!
Since you are adding up what it would cost to get the "free boat" running, before you take on the project, there's a few more 'costs' you need to consider:
-Flywheel housing & coupler for a 5.7 L (unless there's still one on the boat and it happens to be for a 5.7)
-Engine mounts
-Marine manifolds & risers (and y-pipe unless it's still in the boat)
-Thermostat housing
-Marine gasket set (need to change the existing head gaskets to marine gaskets)
-A 'marine' spec carburetor (you'll be abandoning the EFI unless you can find an entire marine-EFI setup for a 5.7)
-Flame arrestor
-A 'marine' spec starter, distributor, water pump, alternator, & fuel pump (Vortec block may not accept a conventional marine fuel pump)
-Misc throttle & shift linkage mounts, solenoid setup (unless still in the boat)
As you can see, it would actually be easier if you had a blown engine from this boat to transfer accessories from. This doesn't begin to address the question of the status of the outdrive, the hull & transom.
Also, like Bond-o mentioned, you'd need to know the overall gear ratio of the outdrive. If it had a different engine, say a 4 cyl or V6, the ratio will be too far out to use the 5.7 and gearsets would need to be changed.
I'm not trying to discourage you from a project like this. I'm just trying to help you understand what you'd be getting yourself in to. If there's any way you could get your buddy to check the input

utput ratio of the outdrive (or a model number) that would give us an indication of the size of the original engine.
