Any insurance experts out there?

My car got whacked in a parking lot over the weekend. Hit and run deal - no information left behind by the other driver. My question: would this fall under my "comprehensive" insurance, or my "collision" insurance? Also, do I need to file a police report in order to collect anything from my insurance company? We live in MN if it matters. Thanks!

It falls under Uninsured Motorist and you should not be responsible for the deductible. I have had a similar occurrence and that is what covered it for me. I did need a police report.

That varies depending on who your insurance carrier is and what your policy covers/doesn't cover.

I am unhappy with the cost of my auto insurance so I have been diligently investigating some of the other companies, all of whom promise great savings.

Bottom line? You can "save" a bunch with any company by reducing coverage, increasing deductibles and deleting certain coverages. That is 99% of the "savings" you get by switching companies, plus you lose some deductions for driving and insurance history.

What you need to do is ask your insurance agent what your particular policy says about. it.

I ended up staying with the company I have been happy with for 45 years.

It depends.

In some states, Uninsured Motorist for a hit-and-run will only pay medical for you and others, if you are in the vehicle, during the hit-and-run. Vehicle damage must be filed under comprehensive.

Whatever, there will likely need to have a police report.

Your agent is the one to get the right answer.

Collision.

Sorry all the rest of you are not correct.

Bob and the others, you have to prove the other party is uninsured, in order for "Uninsured Motorist" coverage to apply. Since the other party is unknown, you can't prove that they are uninsured.

The only way for it to be comprehensive is if it was an object, not a car that struck it. And the only way to know that is to see the damages. Your initial post makes it seem pretty obvious that another car collided with yours. hence the reason it's covered under "Collision".

Sorry to thread jack but I was hit by a deer last Thursday, falls under comprehensive because it was an animal not a car. My deductible is $500 because at the time I calculated I would have to get in an accident in one of my cars every other year to save money with a $250 deductible. Come to find out that the lower deductible for "only comprehensive" costs $3.30 more for 6 months and would have saved me $250. I guess you live and you learn!!

Gotta agree with TW, JB. It is collision and strokeoluck will be paying his deductible.

Well dang! I guess I need to contact my insurance company and see if they will accept a check and an apology for the two times that has happened to my vehicles. I should pay them back for the repairs!! Do you mind if I quote you on it?? ;) It certainly did work that way in Vermont.

Let's see how this one pans out......but in my circumstance I was indeed correct and proving that the unknown vehicle would be ridiculous because then it would actually be a known vehicle!!!!

Same thing happined to me. Someone bent my fender in a store lot and left. I called the insurance company and got told that my comprehensive didnt cover it and the only way for them to pay would be to file under collision. I dont carry collision so I got stuck . Un insured coverage doesnt apply to hit and run accidents.

Bob your experience is in VT, which must have some really strange insurance laws.

The original poster is in MN, where the laws are more like every other state. It's collision, not uninsured motorist.

Seriously Bob, how can you know the other party was not insured, if you don't know who the other party is? It's simple logic. So either your insurance company is stupid, you are mistaken as to how the claim was covered, or the State of VT is stupid.

Which do you think it is?

It is NOT "Unknown Vehicle" coverage, it's "Uninsured Motorist" coverage. Geez, it's not a hard concept to understand. So as I state above, either you, your insurance carrier, or the State of VT doesn't understand this amazingly simple concept.

First you are looking for a fight and there is no need for an attack. I explained what I had covered and if you do not have the same level of insurance or service then Oh Well....

Take a few minutes and read this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uninsured_motorist_clause

Do not start calling things stupid.

Had a similar situation happen to a friend of mine here in GA. His brand new F-250 (about a month old) was backed into in a parking lot. No note, no witness. His insurance paid out under Uninsured motorist... I guess JB was right in that "It Varies" by insurance company and by state...

In Wisconsin here.
My truck was hit in a grocery parking lot, during a blizzard.
No police report, police wouldn't even show up.
I paid the deductible, believe it was collision that paid, as it counted as an "incident" on my insurance.

As already said I think different places have different rules. It varies to an extent in different provinces of Canada as well.

Hi guys. First, thanks for all the responses! Second, I didn't mean to start a p*ssing contest. Sorry 'bout that. I do appreciate the insight and yes, I'm guessing insurance can vary a bit from state to state. Thanks again!
