I agree with you 100%. I was trying to show that there was no bias in the definition. I still believe that the definition is correct, but the politics in this country have turned the terms into a perversion of what they really mean.

Hey Mgraveman, Das Capital boasted ideals that Lenin and Stalin never met in their real world application of the distructive ideology. The definaition you posted may contain lofty ideals, but it is hardly unbiased nor does it match any current real world application. Liberalism over the last 1000 years has producted many positive sociatal norms, as has modern post Reformation Christianity. Respectfully JR

If by "liberal" you mean the classic liberalism of Thomas Jefferson, Adam Smith, John Stuart Mill & Milton Freidman, that stresses the importance of human rationality, individual property rights, natural rights, the protection of civil liberties, constitutional limitations of government, free markets, and individual freedom. Then, yes, I am a liberal.

If you are talking about the modern liberalism of Franklin Roosevelt, Ted Kennedy, Hilery Clinton & Nancy Pelosi. NEVER!

Hey Pony, I don't know what Boom truly thinks, he may like to push the envelope to get replies as Bro Haut does from time to time. Most posters here on iboats are not "Liberals" as defined by the modern idelogy in place in America today. They own boats, and most had to earn the money to pour into the hole in the water. They need to be able to think when they are out on the water, or they just don't survive very long. Some hard left Libs may be able to do it for a few minutes, but it is contrary to their basic nature over the long term. It is possible that "classical Libs" like Art seems to be could easily cooexist in the boating world, the modern ones would seem to be at odds with their own nature. Respectfully JR

All of this is why I asked Art to define what he sees in himself that is liberal. My guess is that he is far more "conservative" (today's definitions) than he is willing to admit. Many people associate conservative with mean, and liberal with nice. My mother, who is a true liberal, elite, snob, educator, Bush hating, Obama loving, lefty, actually taught me most of my conservative values. One of the most confusing contradictions of my life The best I can tell is it feels good for her to be a leftist, socialist espousing, euro loving, knucklehead because she buys into the conservative = mean label and is subject to a mountain of peer pressure amongst her liberal, elite, snob, university teaching, knucklehead friends and colleagues . . . If she admitted that she taught her sons personal responsibility, that life isn't fair, that racism is evil (i.e. affirmative action contradiction), that good people can follow evil (explanation of holocaust), that human life is precious, that working for a living is the deal, she might get kicked out of their club . . .

BTW, she actually said that the murdering suicide bombing scum (my words) are "desperate" recently and I lost it . . .

This IS interesting. My Dad, especially in his later years was a New Deal/FDR bashing conservative. So, naturally, I became something else. Maybe you and I never outgrew our teenage rebellion years! And, oh yes, I think that I would really like your mother.

Actually I was as liberal as her in my teens and early 20s. What converted me was working in a real live profit making business that hired people for the skills they had and found positions for people that had missing skills too. I realised that it was business that was employing America not Government . . .

And, oh yes, I think that I would really like your mother.

Too bad she already has an equally left leaning "life partner". (In case anyone is confused by my hermaphroditic euphemism, my Stepfather is male, hetero and actually an OK dude for a liberal elite scumbag . . . )

The Cornservative = mean kool aid was very sucessfully "projected", (psyco babble for they: Liberals, are obviously the mean ones), onto the right and sold by all elements of the left and of course: the MSM in the early 1980s by all those lefties who were crushed that Jimmy Carter was not relected to surender to the USSR, and were very alarmed about that "Cowboy": Ronald Reagan when he won a landslide. That was before the internet and the high growth days of talk radio. In fact that garbage launched Rush Limbaugh's great career appealing to frustrated Cornservatives who were surrounded by the loony left in the media and most Universities! The USA today shows a large percentage of Democrats actually believe that George Bush and the CIA hatched up the 9/11 attacks. Thanks Cmyers, I do think it explains the Cornservative leanin' or much more reasonable n' rational Libs that post here on iboats. Although I don't engage intellectually the Seattle Libs that are land luvers as frequently as I engage people here, there is much greater reasoning that goes into most of their posts then the irrational stuff I hear daily in the Seattle metro area. The survival angle must be the reason: me thinks!!! JR

I am just a religious jewish guy who tries to live according to the ideals of his religion.
