SBN, only remote potential for attack would be to the mother board bios. Very romote chance of that IMO. That chip (bios), I do believe, is only on board memory that retains its memory after power down. Ram and cache memory are purged upon power down.

Well Well. Wake up, rubbing sleep from eyes, while frantically swilling down steaming hot coffee to discover a new era has dawned

2 new entrants into the Linux club!

SBN, what program did you burn it in?

Someone here told me to download this; SetupDVDDecrypter_3.5.2.0 and I did and used it to burn it to cd.

Re: Any Linux users?

ok knoppix looks cool, but it won't use my modem (cheap POS). some times it says the modem is busy, sometimes it says it needs to be configured, sometimes it says that the modem is not ready. I ran "scanmodem" and bash reports....

Modem candidates are at PCI_buses: 0000:01:02.0

Providing detail for device at PCI_bus 0000:01:02.0
with vendor-ID:device-ID
----:----
0703: 14e4:4212 Modem: Broadcom Corporation BCM4212 v.90 56k modem (prog-if 00 [Generic])
SubSystem 14e4:0002 Broadcom Corporation: Unknown device 0002
0000:01:02.0 0703: 14e4:4212
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 64, IRQ 18
Memory at ff8fe000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=4K]
I/O ports at dc00

Internal_test: ./scanModem test 14e4:0002 debian 2.4.27 3.3.5

Any Ideas, other than another modem?

I Have saved a config to floppy (type "knoppix floppyconfig" at boot prompt). I'll be looking through the parts bin to find another that may be compatible with knoppix, what I see so far I like, just may be time to say good by to microBillsoftgatesware! No more $40 a year for anti virus, fire wall etc. Looks like it can be installed to a harddrive also, but there you go again (anti vi~ ~~~ etc.)

Re: Any Linux users?

rwise - In a word, no. Dell made a driver up for Redhat 7.2 and .3 that could be converted to work with Debian. As a matter of fact, it wouldn't be too difficult for a seasoned linux programmer as you would not be trying to port it to the 2.6 kernel.

But it would be much, much easier to simply obtain a compatible modem. This is an unfortunately common problem with so-called 'winmodems' that use the computer's CPU to do the signal processing that regular modems naturally do. The problem is that the software was originally only written for one particulair operating system. As these were 'buget' OEM modems (Dell & Gateway), their manufacturer (Broadcom) chose not to support them.

Re: Any Linux users?

Paul
Thanx, have I ever said "I hate winmodems"? What about a external modem? I think I have a practical peripherals 33.6 external modem new (old stock) in the box. I have some others around, I'll give one of them a try. I have a pile of 33.6 and I never get a connection here faster than 28.8, so it shouldn't make much difference in speed. I just did not have time to build it myself when I got this one, first "out of the box" computer I have had in a long time.
Richard

Actually, that was me, but I yanked the post since I have not used DVDDecryptor to burn iso's. I didn't want to lead you down the wrong path, since I didn't personally have any experience with that feature.I use it for another feature it offers. ;)

It's nice to know it works...

Re: Any Linux users?

reporting in from the knoppix boot cd. the value i see in a net browsing machine that boots from this cd (minus hdd) is that a user can configure the browser so as kids can surf safe sites (ie...blues clues) without a chance of steering into inapropriate sites, or..........catching a virus or malicious spyware.

a drawback........all settings made to a browser are lost upon shutdown. therefore, were a person to configure a machine for net browsing, power schemes must also be set to allow machine to "sleep" without loosing settings. a drawback to this is that eventually ram memory will be saturated,..."full"...and a powerdown will be required.

bottomline, it has been fun playing with this knoppix boot cd....thanks for the thread. :D

Re: Any Linux users?

I had no idea this would mushroom into this 132 post monster!!

I hope the fellas that tried Knoppix had a good time. It does offer lots of possibilities. Perhaps some will go on to the full distros of Linux.

Re: Any Linux users?

pjc
did you try making the floppy disk wuth your settings on it? You should be able to save the settings and then on boot, when the prompt comes up, typs "koppix floppyconfig" without the "" press return and push in the floppy. Or you could remaster the cd putting the files saved to floppy on the cd. This is what I am looking at as floppys tend to fail to often!
Richard
