Moles love grubs so get a grub killer. There are serveral, some in a spray connected to a hose and others in a granular that you spread. I use "Whole Control" which says it repels moles, voles, pocket gophers and other burrowing tunneling animals. Its made by DR. T's nature products but from what I can tell it is castor oil with some other ingredients, but mostly castor oil. I use it in the fall and again in the spring. Only have a 1/2 acre.

get a 5 gallon plastic bucket<br /> drill 2) 1/8" holes in the bucket about an inch or two from the top (one on each side).<br /> Drill the same size hole dead center in the top and bottom of a beer can. Now slide a straightened wire hanger through the hole in the bucket,slide the beer can on the wire and continue sliding through the other hole in the bucket. coat the entire beer can with peanut butter and center it in the bucket. put about 4 inches of water and anti-freeze in the bucket and make a ramp leading from the floor to the rim of the bucket. The rats will climb the ramp and when they reach for the peanut butter the can will spin and they will fall in the fluid and drown. These red neck mouse traps work on mice but I'm not sure about rats.

Sounds like someone should go into the Rent-A-Ferret business. Mole problem here solved with castor beans cracked open with pair of vise grips and placed in tunnels. Do not use your hands as it will burn the tar out of them. If that doesn't work my doctor removed a big mole from my left cheek but at 250.00 a mole that could get expensive. That and he doesn't make house calls you would have to take the moles to him.

OMC,<br /><br />I've also heard these work well. Can use a dowel instead of a wire to span the bucket, just make sure the can spins freely on whatever you use. <br /><br />Also, if you're adding antifreeze , make sure that no pets can access the bucket. Antifreeze is very attractive and deadly to pets!

There used to be a poisen I used, still have several pounds. Last I heard it was outlawed for some reason. I think it was called Ropax or something. It is in individual bags, about a spoonful in each bag. The problem with poisen is they die. When they die they rot. When they rot they stink. <br />Need to get rid of them, their entry, their breeding ground and their dens. If you see one, you have one hundred.<br />I also had a cat that was great at killin rats.<br />When I was a kid on the farm, we were redneck enough we had rat killins. I would pick a saturday, call all my friends and we would have us a rat killin. We'd go around the farm findin their dens, diggin them up and killin them. We would club them, shoot them with shotguns, that was always fun 5 kids with shotguns digging up a den and opening fire with 12 guages on the hundreds of rats we would finf. We would also run water down the holes til they came out then kill them. On hard to get to holes we would run the car exhaust into the hole and gas them. Gas and matches worked great if it was away from structures. Nothing funnier than a rat running around soaked in burning gas!

Fish, your "cone of exclusion" is a decent idea, but rats are smart enough to figure it out. You can bait them or snap-trap them. They are getting into an attic, so it isn't unreasonable to think a person couldn't go up and remove any carcasses. Me, I would repair all holes, cracks, and gaps 1/4 inch or greater, and place snap-traps or bait in the attic to eliminate any rats that are still in the attic.<br /><br />gspig, I use those gas sticks for moles. I locate the freshest mounds by having the customer rake out all mounds the night before. Any new mounds the next morning indicates that that is where they are at. I then probe around the mounds until I find the tunnel. I light a gas stick, place it in the tunnel, and cover the hole. Dead moles are the result. The gas sticks are pretty cheap, you can get them at hardware stores and such, they are called Giant Destroyers. They work quite well. There is nothing that can be done to keep them away, you have to just keep killing them, unfortunately. We also use a machine we call the Gophernator 2000, which basically fills a tunnel system with propane and then ignites it. The end result is a flash of flame out of every hole and a whole bunch of dead moles/gophers/ground squirrels...

JasonJ,<br /><br />What about using calcium carbonate for moles? I read a long time ago that you can put some into the tunnel system at several places, then pour water over it & cover with a bucket. It supposedly creates a poisionous gas that infiltrates the tunnel system & kills them. If it works, might be an alternative for those that don't have access to a Gophernator 2000 (which sounds pretty awesome, by the way. I'd love to see one in action!).<br /><br />Also, any tips for voles? Several neighbors have them, & seems like their tunnel systems aren't quite as suitable for the types of systemic elimination you mentioned above. I've heard from one person to buy some poisoned mouse seed, find an active run, dig a small hole & drop the seed in, and recover. Seems like voles would be alot harder to eliminate than moles. Is that true?

You could go with the calcium gig, but why bother? The gas sticks are cheap, easy to use, and always work. Thankfully Voles are not a big deal here, they crop up once in awhile, but our main problem here is Pocket Gophers and Ground Squirrels. I don't have a perfect answer for Voles just because I have not had to deal with them often enough to come up with the best solution.

Keep in mind, before you get all dewy eyed that these are the same creatures that depopulated half the worlds population in the dark ages, they are not nice fuzzy critters, they are disease ridden vermin who will bite you while u r sleeping. Look screw the dumb stuff and kill the darn things.

I do not know if you have the "Home Depot" where you live, but I am sure if you find a local hardware store(or something like that), you will find that they have a plug that emits a high pitch noise that mice and rats cannot stand. <br />The plug is guaranteed for 500 sq ft. My buddy just bought one and I am going to get one as well. I do not have mice/rats in the house, but I live on a farm and I know we have them. <br />I wish I knew the name of the product. <br />If I remember tomorrow I will ask my bud what it is called.

Try a poison bait called Ramik.<br />Put it under a trash can lid or plant saucer weighted w/ a brick to prevent pets & birds from eating it, near the holes.<br />Use gloves & check it daily & add more if they are eating it.<br />Do this for about 2 weeks.
