I have a 20 ft pontoon boat with a 40hp motor. A friend of a friend has a 85 hp Mariner motor for sale...I don't know anyone with a mariner motor but would like to get a little feed-back as to how dependable they are....Are they more expensive to keep up than other motor like Johnson/evenrude etc.
any info would be greatly appreciated.

Read up in the mercury repair section or use the search function to find your info.

I have read the "official" info on these engines, but I wanted to see if anyone had any first hand info...Every manufacturer swears that their product is the best, longest, tallest, widest, biggest, gets the best gas mileage, will last longer, etc etc

A Mariner is a re-stickered Mercury engine, origninally designed to sell in different markets than Mercury, but that was back in the day. They are identical to the same Mercury outboard of it's particular HP and vintage.

I've owned a few types of makes of outboards, they all ran well with few issues. If you take care of an outboard and do the proper maintenance on it your problems will be few and far between. I currently own an 86 Mariner, before that it was a Johnson. Really can't tell the differance between the two.

I am a mechanic and if you were to ask me I would tell you to avoid a johnson, go for the Mariner (it's a Merc in a grey suit:D). I find johnson's are a pita to work on. The shift rod system is about as bad as you could make it, and they have major issues with breaking drive shafts, that's why they had to go to a 2 piece shaft, and now they charge an arm and the use of both legs for it! And the thermostats on the V4s are difficult to access, why on earth did they put them there? Why not put them at the top of the heads, like Merc did!
