Good evening folks. Have been lurking here for years off and on (as in like nearly 2 decades worth of years). Have a couple questions that are related to the business side of things if you're willing to answer. I won't get into specifics (although I'd love to ask a few more questions but not everyone wants their info put out here in the open).

In a typical 40 hour work week. For those of you that pay your employees by the hour and charge labor by the hour. How many billable hours would you expect from a seasoned mechanic per 40 hour work week on average?

I appreciate any insight other shop owners or employed mechanics could offer. Just looking to get a rough number to pencil on for a bit to hypothetically work out some other numbers.

A lot is going to depend on the season...winter will be slower than summer !! Also where your located, near big bodies of water or way out by the desert. Having worked in a small shop way back when, I can tell you for sure todays shops have greatly inflated their overhead compared to years past. I have worked for owners that just sit on there butts waiting for business to walk in the door, where other's actually went out and got work to keep the shop busy. Lots of variables can be involved.

Too many factors involved.------Depends on if you are a " service only " shop.----Trying to attract new boat sales.----Shop paid for or high overhead.-----Experienced mechanics?----Well to do customers ?----Seasonal shop ?

Also depends on what your mechanics are doing ... small jobs will have fewer billable hours per week because of the time it takes to clear the service bay out, get the next job and pull it in the service bay. Larger/longer jobs should generate more billable hours.

This is all predicated on you billing time and materials. If you are a flat rate shop, then your billable hours will probably be more on the smaller, more routine jobs.

When all is said and done, a service organization is doing very well at 70% efficiency.

A more reasonable number for planning purposes is 50-55%.

Does the mechanic also have to wait on customers, answer the phone, sell parts, order parts, sell motors, eat time wasted on unrepairable motors, etc, etc? Been there, done that.
