All packed up and nowhere to go...... My birthday is the 15th of this month and the wife and I both took Thur- Sunday off. Our thoughts were to go camping on the St Johns River, spend the day on the boat and evenings in front of the fire with an adult beverage or 7. Then I realize its BIKE WEEK!!! nothing available. So now I am looking West. Looking for a place water accessible, dont need any hookups, just a place to put the boat in and room to throw up a tent. Inverness, Crystal River, Homosassa???? ANyone know of a decent place or campground over there? Thanks.

One of my favorite places to camp is Long Point in Sebastain. Just a little island. You can pull your boat right up to your campsite....in the water. Here is their site.......http://www.campingspacecoast.com/longpoint/index.php....

Also Sebastain Inlet has a large campground. If you like to fish, these places are good. If you just like to explore, same.

Good Luck!

Looks perfect, exactly what were looking for, however being on the East Coast during Bike Week I am sure I wouldve had to book way in advance. Thanks.

All kind of stuff over here in and around Tallahassee too. You've got the Apalachicola, Wakulla, Wacissa, Suwanee, Econfina, Aucilla and Ochlocknee Rivers which have tons of camp sites and lead all the way to the gulf, and they're all within 30-45 min of town. We also have St. George Island, St. Vincent's Island, St. Mark's and Cape San Blas, if you want to stick to the beach. Of course, there's PC and Destin even further west, but I would steer clear of them as it is Spring Break. Have fun! We love pics. Especially of the boat in action!

Have you thought about a cruise north up the St. Johns and stopping in the Green Cove Springs or West Jax areas (River City Marina or Jax Landings)?

Also, if you're interested, look into the Third Central Florida Get-Together thread. It's 1/2 mile off of the river (no boats needed) at my place. All iBoaters welcome. June 9th.

Maybe check Hontoon Island State Park for camping, cabins, etc....a real nice place, especially this time of year before the heat and bugs!...They have nice, safe dockage for your boat, snack bar, rest rooms...only a couple of miles by boat to Blue Springs for swimming! Good Luck!:)

Looks sweet, unfortunately (hence it being an island) only accessible by boat or ferry. Need to get too much stuff, grill, cots, tent, bags etc.... Nice to know about it for the future though. Have you been?

Yes, I have been there, by boat, of course. It was a 30' cruiser, so we slept on the boat. And this is a boating website, I thought you might actually want to boat to it! ;)

Technically you can walk there from Clearwater beach. You just get wet up to the knees, I am told! So you could park your vehicle there and make it a hiking trip to the island. It's "only" about 2 miles. ;)

Well thanks for all the suggestions, we were able to find a site at Salt Springs National Park. It is app. 4 miles from there to Lake George by means of "Salt Run". Of course there is Silver Glen close too. If any one else has any input on the campground, lake, river or anything, I wold love to hear it.

Re: Any Suggestions (Florida)

Salt Springs is a nice area, has clean rest rooms and a nice grocery store within a short walk for groceries, drinks, fried chicken! Don't swim over on the far sides, 'cause a gator killed a lady there a couple of years ago! There's a nice shady camping beach area down the run on the left about a mile before it dumps into lake George. Silver Glenn is a beautiful area but turns into a real zoo on the weekends with dozens of boats all anchored up in a bunch!....gets crowded and noisy! Astor has a couple of nice restaurants and bars right on the water...just pull your boat up and you're there. Watch for the River Cops/DNR guys, no wake zones, drinking while boating, PFD's,etc....they're out there!....No alcohol in Silver Glenn Springs! Avoid Lake George during windy conditions! Good Luck!:)

South of Lake George is Astor. A few small spots to get off if you want as well as Jungle Den...if the restaurant is still open.

Silver Glen has tamed down a bit, but you can get in with coolers if the FWC is out front...just don't go in with open containers and use the red plastic cups.

Pacetti's on Trout Creek just west of Green Cove Springs opens up into the St. John's river. Nice campground, docks are ok, ramp is gravel, When yolu come out of trout creek (Fishing) it opens into a cove on the St. John's, Room to ski, tube, or whatever. If you head south on the St. John's, about five miles, is an island where boaters gather, They call it the Redneck Riveria and on Friday nights, good food, music, and beverages. Just bring your own to supply but the atmosphere is great.
