I have a 1991 VIP fish and ski with a 3.0 I/O. The ski rope is tied off on the hook in the back. I am having trouble pulling skiers (average size) out of the water. The boat just doesnt want to plane out. Once they fight long enough to get up (Drinking all the lake water) and the boat planes off we have no trouble pulling them. I know to try and put the weight in the boat up front unitl it planes off, but we dont have that much weight to move around. I know that they make trim tabs, which are kind of expensive, to fix this problem. My question is, does anyone know any tips to getting my boat to plane out faster while pulling someone or how to get a skier up faster( and keep them from fighting so hard).

Thanks

Aaron

I also know that your prop has alot to do with it but i dont know what pitch/size I have or know much about props in general(new to boating). Dont have the money right now to buy and new prop ro trim tabs right now.

Let's see. A few basics to start with.

Is your trim all the way down? it should be.
How many people in the boat? Fewer is better because there is less weight. 2 people max.
Have the spotter (if required) move as far forward as possible.
Is the skier experienced?
How heavy is the skier and do you have large enough skis?
Is the skier wearing baggy trunks that balloon full of water when starting?
Does the engine rev up without the boat moving - like the prop is slipping in the water? (possible prop ventilation)
Does the bow come way up?

Until you find out the pitch of your prop, it is going to be difficult for anyone help with advice.

Best way to tell if you are appropriately propped:

Go as fast as you can...full throttle...trimmed out. What are your RPMS when going this fast? It should be 4,600 or slightly more, for your year/make/model, in order to have maximum holeshot.

If it's only turning 4,200, for example, this is an indicator that you are over-propped and that you need to replace your prop with one that has 2" less pitch. If you do this it will have much better watersports capabilities.

I would suggest getting a shark tail these are not too expensive but I have seen a huge diffrence in take off. Your boat sounds like it has the smallest motor size for the length of the boat.
