My Maine Coon kitty has had a respiratory infection since we got her 2 years ago.Fortunately it only affects her by her sneezing once in while and the telltale sign is that she has chronic boogers in her nose that I usually clean with a Qtip. She has been treated with clavimox and it usually clears up the boogers but they return soon after the clavimox runs out.We tried a new RX called Orivax which may have cured her.She has been off it for a week now and her nose is 99% clean everyday since. The vet wants her on it long term now which is ok by me.She was on a 1/2 per day and now the vet wants her on a whole one every third day.Im sure the vet knows better than me but it just seems to make more sense to do 1/2s instead of a whole one.Wouldnt the whole one pass through her system too quickly to get the benefit she need from it for 3 days at a time????

IMHO, one pill every 3days is to reduce the dosage and to maintain an adequate level of medication that is safe in the long term for kitty.<br /><br />Retaining too high a level of any medication can cause serious damage to various organs in one's pet. <br /><br />The smaller the animal the more precise the vet needs to be when dispensing.<br /><br />This would be determined according to the results of the bloodwork.

It seems like I've heard that cats metabolize at a different rate than dogs and humans, i.e. it takes longer to "waste" substances. Medication remains in their system longer than you might expect. If that's the case, it makes sense to give doses spaced farther apart than one would expect.<br /><br />I'm no expert, but I did stay in a Holiday Inn years ago.

Did you specifically ask your vet this question? If not, I would.

I did question it but when I called I spoke to one of the office girls and she said she would ask.Now did she ask the Vet or did she ask the girl next to her???I dunno .It just seems that 1/2 of a pill 2 times over 3 days would be more effective than an entire pill once in 3 days.Especially since she made excellent progress with 1/2 pill a day.

from 1800petmeds:<br /><br />"Orbax (orbifloxacin) is a broad spectrum<br />antibiotic used in cats and dogs to treat infections caused by susceptible bacteria. It is available as 22.7mg and 68mg scored tablets. The usual dose in dogs and cats is 1.15-3.5mg/pound by mouth every 24 hours. Use with caution in young, growing animals as well as pregnant or nursing animals. Do not give with food. (sold per tablet)"<br /><br />I would ask the vet about dosage.

I guess the Vet wasnt sure either because they calld me again to tell me the same thing again.1 full tablet every three days.I guess I will make sure to give her the whole tablet when I plan to be home with her incase she has a reaction to it.

Maybe you should give the pill to the kitty rectally with a slingshot (humor). I'm not a vet but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.
