any way to test new spedometer pitot?

i have an '89 invader merc 4cyl 3 litre w/ 412 hrs. and i got 'er last march and the sped. never worked. i noticed the break in the line inches from the pitot. i replaced the line and the pitot but i want to test it b4 i take 'er out. can i gun a garden hose at the pitot in my driveway? still not sure exactly how it works?! thx.

the speedo works on air pressure, in the tube. the force of the water on the little hole in the pitot, increases the air pressure in the line. i used the air hose on my compressor, and held the nozzle about 6 inches away from the pitot, and blew air at it. you can try the water hose. if you can't see the speedo and do the hose at the same time get someone to watch the speedo.
