Re: ANYBODY been to LAKE POWELL? GOING IN JULY...

Hey there pitate. My last trip was last October. The water level is the same now as it was then. Where you want to go depends where you plan to put in and how much fuel you can carry or drag with you. This last time I put in at Antelope. I'll never put in at Wahweap again until the lake comes up enough to open the Castle Rock shortcut. If you're coming from CA or AZ or anywhere South, I'd go to Antelope. From the North, I'd head to Bullfrog. These two marinas are a solid half day trip apart at cruising speed and all the best stuff is in between them. July is a great time to go. Let me know where you plan on putting in and maybe I can give you some ideas on what to check out. You camping on the lake or heading back to civilization every night?

I agree with the rat. Where are you heading? I have my houseboat at Bullfrog. Heading there next week.

The places to go to depends on where your staying, Camping on the shore or Motel at Page? Also depends on fuel capacity on the lake.

Fuel is quite expensive at the Marinia's.

Usually go to Rainbow Bridge and hike Hole in the Rock once a year.

I usually sleep during the middle of the day, and play in the morning and the evening

If your going to ski, wakeboard, or ride wave runners, usually can find a place at each location.

July will be very hot, you will need protection and plenty of fluids.

We usually park the houseboat somewhat close to a marina and visit daily or every other day.

I'll be there all through the summer, maybe I'll see you there.

To answer your other questions, overnite parking seems safe enough. Just like anywhere else, don't be stupid and leave things open or visible. A few years ago, my friend took a sports car down to Bullfrog. When he got off the lake, all four wheels were stolen from his car, and it was sitting on blocks.

At Bullfrog there is an entrance fee, I think $20.00 for multiple days, I usually buy an annual pass.

There are no campsites there that Iknow of. If you camp, you will only have what you take with you.

The marina's usually have anything you need, even some food.

If your are going to Page, You will have anything you want if you stay close to Wahweap, it is almost in town. Many people stay in a motel or hotel, and boat during the day.

Research the area your going to, usually the history of the area is very interesting.

I have been to many lakes and this is one of the greatest places on earth, I love it.

Have a great trip.

I love Powell! Coming from N. California, you could choose either Bullfrog or Wahweap. There is primitive camping (only portable restrooms around) you can drive to at Stanton Creek off of Bullfrog. That is where we usually camp. Off the Burr trail, you can camp on the beach, but the water is a ways from the road. If you can take tents, you can always find a beach somewhere to stay. Better have a porta-potti or a groover with you, though. I like the uplake area better than heading south. Good Hope bay is great for water fun, and usually isn't too crowded. They had a floating restroom there last year too. Lots of camping, and if you fish, it's fine there too. From there you can motor up to White canyon, or even up the Colorado river to the bottom of Catract Canyon if you want.
If you're looking for babes, the southern lake is best (just thought I'd throw that in).
Go to wayneswords.com for info on the lake. It's the best resource out there.
Have a great time

Re: ANYBODY been to LAKE POWELL? GOING IN JULY...

We will be at Lone Rock Beach from June 29 to July 7. We have a truck and camper and a ski boat and its really the only place on the Lake you can pull down to the shore with an RV. As much as I hate going through the narrows I love being able to step outside my camper every morning and walk out to my boat to go skiing. We went up to Halls Crossing in March to check out the RV sites. Nice place and beautiful part of the Lake, but it was over $40 a night just to plug in a camper and you are 1/2 mile from the lake. You can't just walk down to the water. You also really can't find a slip for a week either, they say first come first serve every day at Hall's so you are not guaranteed a slip every day which means you are pulling your boat out. The other thing is there is no beach to go to which means you have to pack up the boat for the day. If you have kids like me and there is nothing for them to do when you are sitting in an asphalt RV area its better to be down on a beach somewhere. So we decided to once again brave the crowds at Lone Rock. The other thing is you can drive up the road and fill up some gas cans or even pull your boat and not have to fill at the outrageous marinas. Love Powell though, its the best place on earth. Its awesome that we are within 7 hours. Not a bad drive.

Re: ANYBODY been to LAKE POWELL? GOING IN JULY...

Pirate,
Just got back from powell today (this was my 4th trip down this year). I don't know if your still planning on making the trip, but if you are, here is an update from what I noticed .

We go to Bullfrog, that is where my houseboat is.

There is a lodge there for those who like hotels. I have never stayed there, so I can't advise how nice it is.

There are trailers for rent at Halls marina, just across the bay from Bullfrog marina. Never stayed in those either. The people that work at the marina's stay in the trailers. You would have to trailer your boat every night if you stayed in either place.

There were a lot of people camping on the shore line. I saw some good spots in Halls Bay, you have to drive in pretty far to get the spots.

If you camp on shore, you need shade. It was very hot there, averaged about 102, but the water was about 75 to 80 degrees, very refreshing.
If you stayed in halls bay, the marina store is only about 10 minutes away by boat. You can get Ice and food that easy, and Halls bay is seculded enough to have a great time.

You will have to get a map of the lake to see what I'm talking about.

The other entrance to the lake would be Wahweep. It is at Page Az. I have never entered the lake there, but I have herd the accomadations are better there because it is in a small town instead of in the middle of nowhere like Bullfrog.

Good luck,

Powell is truly a great place to boat at. It is amazing, you'll want to go back every year.

Re: ANYBODY been to LAKE POWELL? GOING IN JULY...

We are considering renting a lakehouse on Lake Powell in July. However, I was told that Powell does not have a marina that sell gas. As a new boater, how do you refuel??? Also, Powell is a small lake, no?

Thanks for everyones comments!
