Anybody built a cabin cruiser?

I was checking the free plans web page, and was smitten with the idea of building a cabin cruiser. The Eager Eve http://www.svensons.com/boats/EagerEve/
caught my eye as something big enough to be useful, but small enough to trailer it.

I used to think such designs looked dated, in a bad sort or way, but for some reason I find it kinda classic now.

That is a cool boat and easy construction. It planes down in the teens with only a 25. Is there enough info to build the boat? I would probably take the well out and hang the motor on the transom...with a small splashwell. Keep us posted if you go for it.

Re: Anybody built a cabin cruiser?

Bill,

I've been trying to print the plans, but even on 11X17, the plans are cropped. Guess I need to figure out how to use on of the plotters, and come in early to crank them out C-size.

This will be a winter project if I tackle it. I still need to finish the pair of canoes I haven't yet started ;-)

If'n I get the zodiac a co-worker is selling, I'd plan to take the 40 hp off of it, and use it on the Eve. If I was to buy new motive power, I think a 50 hp honda would be a perfect match.

I was also thinking about doing away with the motor well, and haning the motor out back. First thought was the advantage of the well is it keeps the motor and prop away from fishing lines. Second thought is, if the prop gets wrapped up in something else, it'll be major grief getting it unstuck with the motor in the well. Me thinks hanging it off the back is the better route, I could care less about trying to make it look like an i/b.

Considering our states propensity to rain, I have the feeling the zodiac will loose it's charm after a season or two, and a cabin boat will be much more enjoyable to take out.

Have you ever seen one of the Tolman skiff webpages, or a skiff itself. Built in your neck of the woods and many are homebuilt. Do a search engine search...I've lost the links.

Tim,

I hadn't heard of the Tolman skiff, but that looks like a perfect boat for what I want to do, as it should be designed for these waters. I think I'll have to suggest a copy of the book for a fathers day gift.

Well, hope you get those plans...stuffed inside a tie. Not really. If you do start building one, make a website or web photo log and post links on this forum. Those of us who live in the Great American Desert like to see boat builders at work whenever we can...at least those of us who remember water.

I think a 50 4s might be a bit big for that boat. Construction is a tad light for that power. I'd do a 40 2 stoke max and put a few additional longitudinals inside the botton to give more strength. It a cool shaped boat.

I have been looking at the GlenL "Two Plus" for several years. Bigger but not as classic as the Eager Eve but more room for overnites. If I wasn't so darn lazy... http://www.glenl.com/
