First off its a 1986 bayliner trophy with 290 dp. Boating around searching for fish today shifting from forward to reverse trying to get on my spot I hear a loud band and all of a sudden I can only go in reverse. Raise outdrive up only to see a big hole with shaft sticking out a little bit
Now question is what caused this and were do I go from here or how do I repair and were can I find that top part?outdrive 001.JPGoutdrive 004.JPGoutdrive 005.JPG. Thanks for any and all help

Lack of maintenance

You will most likely neet a complete transmission, maybe a whole outdrive.

You will have to pull the drive apart to see the extent of the damage

Can you please tell me what I did in not maintaining it so it doesnt happen again. I thought I always kept it greased and lubed well but maybe not and just a week before I put over a hundred miles on it and all was working fine. Was it lube, grease or what made it happen. Thanks PeteJ

the lube levels most likely have dropped, leading to a bearing failure, hence the bust-out of the top cover. you do check lube levels often, correct? you do pull the drive every year, or at least the upper gear box to inspect the u-joints, correct?

right now, there are a bunch of upper gear boxes on ebay in the $250 to $300 range. that is about $1200 less than what they usually run.

I believe I have checked lube levels but maybe not as much as it sounds like I should and I have never pulled drive or upper gears just cause I did not know that I should:( Super big thanks for that info and I am already eyeballing those gears on ebay along with complete outdrives if I need to go that route.
Again thanks for the info PeteJ . Oops one more thing does the lower unit lube lube the top gears to?

Took upper drive off today and grey looking oil came out from the top but when I went to drain lower a lot of water and oil came out and I am guessing water is from blown out top. now that I got upper gears of it looks to me like just one brass looking retainer piece broke and it looks like it is what holds the bearings in so that it doesnt blow out out the top. am I correct?outdrive 2 002.JPGoutdrive 2 003.JPGoutdrive 2 005.JPGoutdrive 2 003.JPGoutdrive 2 005.JPGoutdrive 2 002.JPG

All of the bearings seem smooth and all turn freely so does it look like I should get a whole new gear box or just the brass retainer?. After draining lower I filled with auto tranny fluid to prevent rust
