I have a 1984 Bass Champ along with a 40 hp Evinrude that is running solid but prop is not spinning correctly.
My friend and I removed the lower unit not knowing what we were doing at all and with my lower unit completely removed, as I poured out the remaining oil (along with some sludge) this piece pictured came out covered in oil. Anybody know what it is? Can this be why my prop is not functioning properly??
Would greatly appreciate an answer, thanks.

Welcome to iboats

Please give more info about " prop is not spinning correctly." ???

It appears that it could be one of three pieces -

The shifter
dentent, cradle or lever. One of those pieces could have broke :(

Wow thanks ALOT carholme!!!!

First time I found out the there was a problem: I had put her in the water but had NO power! In fwd or rev. Prop wasnt even spinning at all.

Then when I tried at home out of the water it looked like it was spinning and had power.... So me and a friend tried it in the water and no fwd or rev but neutrual wanted to go fwd very very slowly..

Is this because of the broken shift lever?

Can I order this piece now and get back out on the water!?!?!?!

Thanks ALOT!!!

Re: Anybody know what this is?

You will see from the parts description in my previous post that the ears on item 10 fit into the slots on item 12, which fits onto the groove on item 14 and when you make a gear selection, item 14 travels horizontally and moves clutch, item 18 as it is connected via pin, item 21.

If the clutch dog cannot move, gear change won't happen. Odds are that the other ear on item 10 is already broken as well or has spread a little and very poor, if any gear change is happening.

To change this part, you are going to have to open the gearbox and this should be done before ordering parts.

Do you know the model number of your engine?

i have been doin a little resarch.. if i wanted to inspect the gear box my self (with lower unit removed) I start right here right ?

I see alot of people drill small holes and insert a couple screws partially and pull out, is this correct?

Re: Anybody know what this is?

Can anybody explain how I remove the bearing carrier to inspect my shift lever, cradle, shaft shifter etc..

I've seen a couple videos and they drilled 2 small holes, one on each side and screwed in some screws partially and pulled on the screws with some pliers until the seals came out?
Is this correct?

Re: Anybody know what this is?

Why do you want to pull those seals? Are they leaking? That is definitely not the first step in getting to the shift lever.

Here is the parts listing for your model number:

1984 Johnson/Evinrude 40 - OMC, Johnson & Evinrude Parts Lookup

I'll see if I can find a condensed version of the service instructions and be back.

That'd be awesome thanks..
I ve talked to a mechanic and I can bring it in Friday morning.
But I still would like to look for myself if I can. The mechanic said he is going to "open it up and show it to me" so hopefully I can watch him do it.
