Hi,

When I got my free boat and 1977 Merc 850 earlier this year...it came with a fair amount of ""Old Stock" Quicksilver Formula 50-D oil...and some Penzoil TC-W oil. (not TCW-3...)

Anyone remember what changed from these older formulations to what's sold today as TCW-3?

I've gone ahead and started to use up what I have...and will continue to do so unless there's some reason to put it aside and go with the new TCW-3.

Any comments? Just what we need; I guess...another oil thread :)

Thanks for reading, Chuck

It won't kill it should be O.K. TC-W3 is better oil. Tim

IF the oil is still in the original metal cans, hang on to it or check on Ebay. A lot of restorers and collectors are interested in the vintage stuff.

Use TC-W3 oil in your motor as it has a lot better lubrication properties and more cleaning detergents than the original TC-W oil from the early '70s.

Remember oil is cheap - powerheads are expensive.

Are they worth a lot? Do you think I should put my cans on ebay? I have 2 six packs of OMC TC-W in my shop still connected by the plastic rings. They were under my cabin and I didn't want to use the old stuff in my motors.
Eric

Re: Anybody remember TC-W oil (no 3...)

Some of the difference between TC-W and TC-w3 is oriented around lower emissions...and some of the difference is oriented around better lubrication and less carbon build-up.

Can anyone go into detail on that?

Thanks, Chuck

Yes, use the new TC-W3 oil, and because this engine was ran for a long time on the old oil I would say you would benifit greatly by doing a bood decarb, maybe twice.

I remember buying the old pint six-packs of Merc oil......I'd mix it half and half with -3 until gone. And check ebay.

After this post, I checked and found that I have I have some older pennzoil and it says TC-W II. Unless I find otherwise, it is for the snowblower and other 2-cycle but not my mercury outboards.
