That would be a 1.4 liter red X. They were made by Renault in the late 70s and installed in LeCars.

Looks like a Mercruiser 140 HP 181 cubic inch IL4 cylinder from the 1968 to 1982 era

It's also old enough it could be a 120 hp 153 ci used from 64 to 86. Can't read the decal, you might also look on the side of the engine for a tag with the engine serial number.

Your not giving us to much info to go on. If you know the year of the boat, horse power, which out drive it has, it would be very helpful. Maybe I’m getting old, I just can’t see all that much in that picture. Considering it looks like a Mercruiser 4 banger the choices I know of are the Renault 60, 80 and 90 they had an aluminum block and the 80 and 90 had the front of the engine facing the transom, the 90 was a cross flow design with the intake and exhaust opposite each other, it looks like they are on the same side in the pic so that rules that one out. The GM’s 153 CI came in 110 and 120 HP, and 140 HP for the 181 CI, if that helps you any. If it were me and it turned out to be a Renault engine I know the things sucked in cars I’d think twice before buying a boat with one in it.

How much are they asking? That is a great engine. Will run forever. Looks like a very clean powerplant !! Run engine, Check for cracked bellows, make sure it shifts properly while its running. Then check fluids for water.

looks like a 140Hp 153 CID mercrusier, I dont think that old hot air manifold will fit the 181 head.<br /> I dont think any of the renault motors had a front mount.<br /> the 153 was from the mid-late sixties to about 83 or so, from about 83 or so the rest could be 153 or 181 till the late 80's.<br /> I try not to use absolutes due to occasionally the engineers and the factory will fail to notify me of changes.<br /> look on the stbd side of the engine just above the starter on the side of the bellhousing flange and find the seriel number plate and post the number.<br />you freshwater guys are killing me

I dont think the 181 CID (3.0) was in production in 71 so it would be the 153CID (2.5L)<br /> that I have seen the 2.5 was a 110,120,135 and a 140 at various points in its life. OMC had a 120 version with 2 1bbl carbs.<br /> from what I have seen the 181 was at various points a 120,135 and a 140.<br /> gets to confusing sometimes.<br />the rocker cover,breather and decal color and style definately put it in the 70;s. the later ones had a red and white decal some had black numbers.<br />but the style in the photo was early mid seventies.<br /> what we need is that seriel number.

OK,.........<br /><br />It Can't be seen in the photo,.....<br />But,......<br />Using a Trick I learned from You, Rodbolt,.......<br /><br />Look at the Forward End of the Crankshaft,......<br />A 2.5l will have Just a Pulley........<br />A 3.0l, or 181cid, will have a Pulley, AND a Harmonic Balancer................

WOW! You guys are a wealth of information, makes the recreational boater like me feel humble. I like Rodbolt’s idea though, check the serial number, even if you got to call the owners of the boat or take a 90 mile ride, it’s the only way to be sure. Being a 1971 there’s a good chance the motor could have been changed through the years, hopefully to a later model engine with hardened valve seats. PS It looks like everything is pretty well frozen there, Brrrrr, and there's a wet spot on the ground under the outdrive, I'd want to see what that is and where it came from.

Looks like the trim tabs are way inside. Maybe just a result of the photo angle. You can see where the previous ones were located. I would make sure that those old holes are sealed very well to prevent rot in the transom. <br />I think I answered a question that you didn't ask. But then I'm not a mechanic by a very long shot though I did want to put my $.02 worth in. Good luck if you buy it. There were some positive comments about that engine.

It's an aluminum boat. Those "old holes" are rivets.

The sure way to tell the differance between the GM 4 cyls. is a 120 or 2.5 liter has a tin crankshaft puller and the 140 or 3 liter has a harmonic balancer with a puller cast in to it

Thanks for the information every one you are great. I think on my next day off I will make the drive down to see it good eye Always Broke I will have to pay special attention to that. Problem is I am sure it has been moved since the pics if for no other reason to plow after this last storm. damn you christine!!!
