I need to buy a lower unit for my I/O, I believe it's an Alpha one Gen II, I say this because boat is a 1991, from looking at SEI site 1971-1990 is just an Alpha one, which lower unit is smaller(shorter in hight) The Alpha one GenII pictures look identical and they say for 1991-present. any input is appreciated,I went to another site and put in my my S/N #OD461783 with a
1:84 right. and they said it couldn't be found???? So anyone have any luck with a used one? I live in KY.

All the one`s I`ve sold were sold "as-is,no warrenty" because I can`t control how you operate your boat. Why by used when you can have new with a 3 year unconditional warrenty?

I know Doc. your right but I want to get back on the water as quick as I can !!...$$$$. $795+ New prop = about $1000.00 all together (sigh) I was just wanting to fix her and get back out on the water where I belong. Any input about 1991 being an Alpha one GenII?

witch one does it look like, Alpha`s have a brass looking shift shoe and GEN II`s have a SS one bent in a 90. They also have 2 nuts and bolts on each side where Alpha`s have 1 nut on each side.

OK the lower unit on mine has one nut on either side, but on the SEI site says 1972-1990 is the ALPHA ONE, 1991-present is Alpha one genII ??????????????
Whats you opinion? I don't want to order one and find out that its not the right one? Then I will have to ship it back and cost more $$$$

Waven, first, those SEI drives you are looking at are not used. They are BRAND NEW with a 3 year NO FAULT warranty. A no brainer to buy an SEI in comparison to used (Don't even think about it) or even remanufactured.
The easiest way to tell an Alpha One from and Alpha One Gen II is the shape of the skep. On an Alpha, the trailing edge is verticle, and the bottom edge is kinda rounded off. On a Gen II, the trailing edge is angle toward the prop, the bottom edge is squared off, and overall the skeg is larger.

Re: Anyone buy used lower unit with good luck?

i think it's a gen 1...

based on this...

from bam..

R/MR/ALPHA ONE (Sterndrive) 1983-1990
Click on Serial number
6225577 THRU 0D469858
that's gen 1

ALPHA ONE (GEN.II) 1991-1995
Click on Serial number
0D469859 THRU 0F679999

and gen 2..

along with your physical discription.
i think gen. 1 since yer s/n falls under the range of OD469858

that's my guess..

Up around Northern Mn. average rebuilts were starting around $2400 with a 30 day warranty. New SEI 106 warranty 3 years! I have been very happy with my SEI. As mentioned earlier, it's a no brainer... Did you call SEI? I have found that they are very helpful over the phone based on my past experience with them. I'm sure thay could help you identify tour outdrive and get one shipped to you in a few days.

Re: Anyone buy used lower unit with good luck?

I have to agree whith all of you, sounds like to me SEI is the way to go, $$$ for three hundred more it is the way to go for peace of mind, as I mentioned earleir in another post, I completely tore of the skeg, and I am putting on an aluminum prop, It's cheaper to buy a new prop than all the probs. with a SS prop. Thanks for all the advice and i will be calling SEI and see what I can find out with S/N, Thanks Jim and every one else who took the time to give your imput, Good sound advice is always welcome!!

Re: Anyone buy used lower unit with good luck?

Thanks BT Doctur, Well it looks like from the S/N that I must have an Alpha One, I do not know the whole history of the boat, even though it's a 1991 Bayliner doesn't mean that the stern drive is a 91 obviously, by the info you sent me it would appear that it's an Alpha one according to the S/N listed, on the whole unit it does JUST say ALPHA ONE on the upper unit. and the skeg does start all the way from the front all the way to the back of the bottom of the lower unit too. so that tells me that it's been changed out.
Thanks again for your help, I will probably be needing more when the new lower unit gets here, I am going to put pics on here of the damage to just so every one can see from start to finish. Thanks again!!......................Pat

Just for reference, all Alpha Ones, just say "Alpha One". Go look at a 2009 model boat, it'll just say Alpha One.

Re: Anyone buy used lower unit with good luck?

buying a used gearcase at random is a recipe for disaster and could wind up costing more in the long (or even short) run than buying a new afternarket sei. My sei lower is holding up just fine....
