I hope that was a boat that broke loose from its mooring, and not someone who went out in it!

Nah, I'm pretty sure they had to bail out! The harbor is protected from the weather.

Got caught out on L Michigan in similar once, luckily we were on a 37' sailboat.

We were tossed around like a ping pong ball.

Battened down and motored home.

Come to think of it, thats the last time I went sailing.

Those waves were pretty insane at Winthrop Harbor, IL. Luckily I didn't go out in it, but our church had our annual baptism at the lake last night. It was interesting to say the least.

No way in a boat, however I will tell you in my younger days we would search out these conditions on jet ski's (still nuts, I know!) and ride directly into the waves. The ride and air you could get was like no other, we could easily get 20-30 feet in the air! Now when doing this, we always had 2-3 sleds, and certainly were watching each others backs for any problems. I wouldn?t recommend this to anyone who was not an advanced rider, but we were, and it is a rush. Lake Michigan was the best place to find these conditions, due to west prevailing winds.
Liquid motto-cross at it's best!

That boat will end up for sale on Craigs List. Just needs some TLC.

Ha ha!!! That happened to me 3 weeks ago. I was on the bay of Green Bay about 2-3mi out and a freak storm came about.

I was in a 21 foot deck boat and lucky for me made it back to the dock. Never experienced anything like it before and scared the living poop out of me. It went from bright and sunny to 5' waves in just a couple of min. Was getting whipped with water in the face from waves hitting the boat and that hurt like a mother.

Again lucky for us that we got back to land but there were 4 sailboats that capsized. Lucky for them everyone had life jackets and there was no fatalities.

For some reason we haven't been out since????

Sunday was no freak situation. The conditions in the photo had been forecasted for several days. No sane person could have approached the harbor mouth and expected that boat to make it. My guess it he wanted it to sink for insurance purposes.

WOW! not THAT looks familiar.... that's what lake erie looked like the night dad and I got caught in the middle with a plugged fuel filter in a 23' john almand flybridge..... 40 mph out and 6 mph back... couldn't outruns the 2 storms coming from different directions so we spent about 8 hours fighting the waves at just over idle.... up to about 13 throttle but could only do that for a quick burst before it would sputter..... 1: We were really luck to make it back.... 2: I sure wish I'd known then what I know now and I'd have had a spare filter, bypassed the one in it, dumped out the water likely in it, or figured out some other way to get home in 30 minutes before the storm hit us..... UGH! Sure hope those folks at least all came home w/o bodybags.

last 2 weeks have been sucky for lake michigan to many rip tides. those waves look way to nasty even fro me in a 23 foot cuddy. its not about any adrenoline rush at that point its are we going to make it threw the channel alive!! kind of shocked they got past the channel with an open bow and thought they could take the waves.
