series sunday nite on the History Channel?

That's in Yellowknife in the NW terrirories, but they run those in Northern Quebec too. Amazing.

We used to deal with a trucking company that did an annual Ice Road run, and my all time favorite trucker line was from one of these guys that drove for them.
He told me once "When you're driving on a lake, and you feel your rig lugging like she's going up a hill, get the heck out! There ain't no hills on a lake!"

I saw the first episode. Pretty interesting. It is amazing what they go through to drive on ice roads. A very unusual way to make a buck.

Yea, I am taping them, makes for a good collection.
Also have all the "Deadliest Catch" series on tape.

I too got stuck on Deadliest Catch. This must be a "Man" thing. Throw the pot off, bring the pot back onboard. etc. etc. I find the whole thing fasinating.

And yes, I'm also watching Ice Road Truckers.

When "Watching Paint Dry" comes on, I'll probably watch that too_Oh the drama and suspense!!!!

Oh yeah, I'm recording this series too. I've seen one episode before, and have read much about these elite drivers in the trucking magazines.

This is of interest to me, as I drive big rigs for a living also. I can't imagine driving one on a frozen lake though!

I have driven my car on frozen lakes many times while ice fishing, so I have some idea of what its like. Yeah, call me nuts!

The big thing for the trucks is the speed they must travel on the ice. They have to go slow. If they go too fast, it will create a pressure wave under the ice that will break the ice near the land ahead of the truck. Not good! Speed limits are strictly enforced.

Maybe someday I'll give it a try, it would be challenging!

Yep, they are real.
I like seeing what other people do, reality show or not, it's what they do to feed their family.

I find it more entertaining than the cop shows with the pursuits. Just wish it was on a tad bit earlier.

Re: Anyone else watching the Ice Road trucker

According to my trucker friend who did this in Quebec, the biggest danger came in shallow shoal areas. There is an under ice wave that travels in front of the truck, and just like any wave, they will start to break in shallow areas, and can cause the ice in front of the truck to break up if you are going too fast and creating too big a wave.

He also told me that a rule of thumb was that any body of water with 2 feet of ice on it probably is a poor choice to go swimming in.

They earn their money, however much they are paid.
