Actually, 1979 1/2 inline six motors were ADI ignition. Early 1979 inline sixes were distributor ignition, I believe.

OK, got it all set to the sticker on the cowl support, ran it on muffs at 1000 rpm and set the idle mixtures in till stumble then out 1/2 turn, took it to the pond (still on trailer) started but much lower rpms. Increased idle to 800 rpm and adjusted carbs in to stumble and out to slight drop in rpm (1-1/2 turns) and split the distance. (about 3/4 turn out from stumble). Put in gear and stalled. Moved rpms up to 900. Shifted in gear ok and ran at 650-700 rpm. accelerated to max timing point and died. Had to move the carb arm roller tight to the cam so the carbs start to open at 800 rpm and increase the idle mix out another 1/4 turn to get it to stay running past the max idle stop.
Next step is to take it out on the lake (lake Erie) for a test and try to fine tune it.

Gee, it sounds like you changed the idle pickup timing to adjust the RPM. That is not advisable, as it changes the spark advance curve and spark advance to carb synch, throughout the RPM range.

There is an idle stop set screw to adjust idle RPM.
