Anyone ever weld a skag on w/o disassembly?

Anyone ever weld a skag on w/o disassembly, I have to add a piece about 4" long on my 60hp. will it be to hot up at the gearcase.

an easier repair would be to add a Skeggard for about $140...drill 2 holes and slip it on...add screws=done :cool:

Niner, I broke most of the skeg off my '77 Merc 1500. I took off the LU and drove down to the welder down the street. He welded it for me, and I have not had any issues. The replacement skeg was $20 from Merc and the welder charged $80. BTW this was 15+ years ago.

I must say that the welder has significant experience with marine work.

not a problem,here in fl.keys,the corals snap those skegs all the time,had dozens welded,and to answer the question,it can be done assembled,my welder preffered you left oil in to help keep the alum from getting too hot around the seal areas,might have just been his theory,but we never had a problem with his work

go to Iboats marine store and do a search for Skeggard and you can see a picture of one :cool:
