Dixon Here. Boated the Illinois river, put in at starved rock park, The Mississippi, in at Clinton, Iowa. Shabbonna lake, and of course the Rock River. The Rock is my main stomping grounds. The run from Rock Falls to Dixon is usually clear of debris and obsticles after spring flooding is over.

I live across the river from Peoria, the Illinois river is nice for a evening trip for dinner down at Captain Ron's above the Peoria Dam.We do most of our boating down at Lake Shelbyville, nice campgrounds, clean water and no asian carp trying to jump into your boat.Though this summer,I going to try a little snagging below the dam, heard they put up a good fight. :)

Question for you Illinois boaters. Which lake would you prefer to boat on. Carlyle Lake or Rend Lake?

We have a 18' Bayliner 1850LS bowrider and we are looking for a day trip for boating one of these weekends. Any opinion, good or bad, would be appreciated:)

I was born and raised in Illinois. LeRoy/Bloomington area...Then I escaped to Wyoming in 1996.

I get back there every year to visit the folks and my brothers. If you ever get down around that area check out Clinton Lake. Stays warm due it being a Nuke plant cooling lake. If you like fishing for catfish anchor up near the warm water discharge ditch at night, throw out your poles and hang on.:)

I prefer Rend over Carlyle, unless you have a blow boat.

If you go to Rend make sure you get a lake map. There are areas that have submerged stumps and shallow spots. If you go to Carlyle, stay on the west side of the lake if it is very windy. Otherwise it will be a very rough ride.

If you're willing to travel a little further, you might try Kinkaid Lake. Lots of area to explore, and if you are into fishing this appears to be a good lake. Just make sure you have lots of rope for your anchor, in some areas 10-15 foot from shore you may be in 60 feet of water.

I live in Mascoutah, Illinois and usually go to Carlyle Lake with my Lowe 202, 20' Pontoon Boat. I have been at Rend Lake and I would prefer that lake over Carlyle since it is alot nicer but it is a little too far away, especially with the gas prices maybe I will go to Rend this year since gas prices has come down. Yes, I agree the wind at Carlyle will create rough water so I usually will not take my boat out if it is windy at Carlyle. Take care, Bob:)

Re: Anyone from Illinois?

I'm from Dixon, also new to the site. I boat on the Rock, Mississppi, been on the Illinois a few times (never hit anything) been on Clinton Lake, Shelbyville, and a few in southern IL, can't remember the names though.
This August, myself and a few other boats from here are planning on running the Chicago Tri Angle. Any one ever done that? I HAVE been told to stay out of the Chicagop River and Cal Sag though.

Keep YOURSELF out of those two. Your boat will be ok.
