Anyone have any thoughts on the new Lowrance? Elite-7 HDI Sonar/GPS Combo

I'm thinking hard about getting this unit. I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but it "seems" like something I'll be able to figure out. It sure has the size and features I'm after.

I want the GPS for marking all my hunting blinds and running up the river in the dark and being able to locate them. I fish for Walleye, Bass, trout and my beloved Kokanee! I'll never see the ocean with my set up.

I run 2 HDS 7's on my boat and love them. Even after a year, I'm still finding new features. They pack a lot of features in a small box.
That said, I'm sure you will be more than pleased with the HDI. Chart features are crisp and accurate. Sonar is very good too. There are better systems/models out there but for the $, that's a good one.
One point on the accuracy of the chart: Last year I took mine to SE Alaska halibut fishing. Every time we caught one, I 'way pointed' the spot. At one location, we lost a lure (bottom snag). A few days later we went back to try that spot again and set up on the way point. To our surprise, we snagged and recovered our lost lure! Lucky, sure but DANG that's getting pretty accurate!

First of all, sorry for violating rule#11 - I got to thinking I'd put it in the wrong place the first time, thinking this unit was maybe more of a lowly fishing type electronic than a $$$$ open water set up! LOL, even though it's still a ton of $$$ to me! What do they say about sticking with your first choice, it's usually right! ;0)

Thanks for the replies. I guess I'm after one of two things; 1) is it a solid unit for the money that will do the job = helps reassure me I'm doing the right thing, 2) OR, does someone have info that says "STAY AWAY" from this unit!!

I've really been trying to read a lot online about it, and units in general trying to make a good decision. I want to make sure I get one that will do everything "I" want to do with it, and it sounds like this may be it.

The feature set of the Lowrance ELITE-7 is hard to understand. There is a good explanation of the SONAR features in

One limitation of the ELITE-7 that is not well understood is the restricted number of NMEA-2000 datagrams it understands. This limits its usefulness as a multi-function display device.

Most Lowrance information is either tough to find or non existant in the manual, what little info there can be difficult to understand. I like the 7 and may sell my unit and buy that one.
