I am looking to change my cockpit lights that illuminate the deck on my 250DA and am trying to get the admiral on board, Looking for a picture of someone with blue lights in the cockpit that I can show her. Also, Would you do it again? Do you like them?

Here's mine.. LED strip lighting

They look cool (I think), I don't have them on while running, but they are mounted low enough and light up the deck indirectly so theres not a problem with visibility if they are on. One downside, though; they tend to attract a lot of bugs.

My boat is a lot smaller than yours, but I do like the blue lights. I have them as interior deck lighting and stern underwater also. Very cool at night.

Blue and Green are both very easy on the night vision, just keep the light indirect. Red makes me feel like I'm on a submarine or something. I also put a strip tucked up under the rubrail on the stern that illuminates the swim platform. Really neat! The kids love swimming off the boat at night.

That's not how the chemicals and connections in the retina work.

There's a reason for red lights in subs: To preserve night vision in case of surfacing.

Red on all Navy ships. Not just subs

Red on airplane gauges and many "higher end" autos also for the practicality of preserving night vision as mentioned.....x2

Well, not to get in an argument about it. Aircraft and vehicles that utilize night vision technology ONLY use blues and greens for lighting. No reds whatsoever. Red is old school. Check it out...

How about a string of those Christmas lights that pulse in different patterns? That might be be cool.

You could put pink or purple bulbs in there and really be cool.

That has nothing to do with preserving night vision. It's called marketing.

Actually it has everything to do with preserving night vision. It's kind of the point. Subdued blue and green light has a negligible effect on you night vision recovery time compared to red, at the same time allowing you to see much better contrast than red. But anyway...

According to the American Optometric Association :

ENHANCING AND MAINTAINING DARK ADAPTATION

Red Goggles or Spectacles

For maximum utilization of scotopic vision, 20 to 30 minutes in total darkness are required to attain satisfactory retinal dark adaptation. An alternative is to have the aircrew member wear red goggles for 20 to 30 minutes before flying. When worn in normal illumination, red goggles will not interfere significantly with the ability to read most maps, charts, manuals, etc., as long as the printing is not in red ink. Red goggles block all light except red, which enhances rod dark adaptation because red light does not stimulate the scotopic system.

So maybe red is better for military, pilot, and marine applications based on the need for reading charts and maps.

Re: anyone have blue cockpit lights? Looking for a picture.

This night vision debate is hardly relevant, IMO... If you're at the helm and underway, turn the cockpit lights off - your eyes should be out over the water and not inside the cockpit anyway. And if you're moving at any sort of speed, your passengers should be seated, or in the cabin; where if the lights are on it wont affect the operator. So why do we really need cockpit lights on when moving? This isn't a naval vessel with crews of people working the bridge.

No one switches from stock white cockpit lights (which I assume the OP's boat already has) to blue, red, purple, orange, pink, whatever - for anything other then aesthetics. So its just a personal preference question.

My car and truck have green dash lighting, but since I don't drive at night with my headlights off, those dash lights aren't a consideration in terms of night vision.

Last time I bought a military flashlight it came with a blue-green lens. Based on personal experience(24yrs in the army) I would rather have the blue-green. Red gets peoples attention. Started off has an equipment operator, I see a red light I start wanting to shut everything down.

What's up guys. I know this is an old thread and I'm real new here and decently new in boating. I have a 2001 bayliner Capri. I was looking into these lights a lot. I was just wondering which lights you used but more importantly if these would be safe to leave on with motor off out in water. Aka battery life and usage. Thanks a lot... Should be seeing some more posts from me now :)

Re: anyone have blue cockpit lights? Looking for a picture.

I will add to the above in that blue lighting is harder on your eyes for night vision. Red is a much better color for night vision. The only time I can think that a blue/blue green light is preferable is for the ability to spot blood. Blood doesn't show up well under red light (obviously), so paramedics/etc use green or blue light to better identify injured areas. Those blue interior lights in the picture hurt my eyes just looking at the picture, I'd want them off for at least 5 minutes prior to departing anywhere at night to allow my eyes time to readjust.
