Re: Anyone have the insurance from West Marine?

I have insurance with Boat US. Are Boat US and West the same now?

Anyway - the although I set it up through Boat US the policy seems to be under written by a 3rd party. I still deal with Boat US (Phone, web, etc) but letterhead on some of the documents they sent is some other company.

As for what is covered, the specifics were clearly outlined in my binder. I can tell you that stupidity does seem to be covered. I recently damaged my own boat and they are covering the repair minus the deductible.

My boat is cheap. I invested in the insurance more as protection against bumping into something expensive. I have to tell you though, the check they just cut me for my recent damage will cover many years of the relatively cheap premium I pay. And the claims process was silky smooth with no hiccups.

Oh, and while boat shopping I used the Boat US website's "free quote" and "free valuation" tools extensively. You can get a quote that outlines what is covered and what is not right at their web site.

You need to find out what is covered- they should be able to tell you. $60 per year is pretty inexpensive- is this a liability only policy?
If so, what dollar limit? Or is comprehensive and collision included, and if so what deductible? Book value vs stated value?
They should be able to provide you with a very specific set of coverages.

Usually a "claim free renewal" is included in the policy premium. So, if your "problem" was your fault, your future premiums will not be relatively cheep any more.

Insurance companies can't exist unless they make a profit. You'll pay for your mistake one way or the other.

I have their coverage. Since my boat is in good shape for it's age I went with agreed value. That means if a total loss occurs I supposedly get the agreed amount. Hope I never find out because I really like my boat.

My dad's sailboat got beat up in a hurricane about 20 years ago due to some "helpful" neighbor resetting his hurricane setup. He had doubled, loose lines, some dip sh_t tightened his lines. One of them pulled out a cleat. Bashed in his bow. Boat US sent a check and asked for a photo.

The 60/year sounds like a membership with towing insurance.
