Re: ANYONE HERE AN AMTECH MEMBER?

I looked into it back in it's infancy, but I'm a boat mechanic. I can't afford to go to Florida to take their courses. For those that can, fine. But I live right in the manufacturer's back yards and most employers around here look for factory certifications. If I lived in the southeast, I'm sure things would be different. From what I've seen, that's a good route for independents. But most motor factories give little to no credit toward ABYC certification or Amtech affiliation regarding warranty reimbursement considerations, and bottom-line, that's what dealerships are interested in.

On the other hand, MMI was years away from existence when I started in this. They started with motorcycles and had just begun when I entered the job market. The marine division came much later. The education you get from them is certainly of value to employers looking for entry-level mechanics. But you'll need to go to the factory schools once a dealer hires you. For independent boat yards, you're in like Flynn. :)

Back in the olden days when I started, there was no formal education for this. All that was available was basically an informal apprenticeship with a dealer and factory school if they were willing to send you. Things have come a long way since then. ;)

Re: ANYONE HERE AN AMTECH MEMBER?

The more certifications you can get, the better for your resume. Without a doubt, driving the boat after a repair is the best part of this job. I've driven boats that I never would be able to afford and such a wide variety that i never could've had another opportunity even if I was a millionaire...which you'll never be doing this for a living. ;)

I heard that the factories were stepping up to the plate by providing motors for training. It would be nice if they would send one teacher for a week to run a basic certification class as well. Imagine graduating with certifications from several manufacturers already in your pocket. Yamaha 5-Star is a good start. The rest need to offer something similar if they truly are committed to building a well trained employee base.
