OK, i recentlly lost a gear set in a Mercruiser Alpha one. It's from a 1989 Bayliner Arriva 2050 with the 5.0LX serial starts with OC. It's the 1:50 gear ratio. I have a complete rebuild kit here now. Everything has been disassambled except for the pressed gear and the bearing races. It's not a basket case, i just removed the top cover and the shaft retainer. My local dealer is about a week out and wants a max of $210.00 to do the work. Is there anyone who can assemble this, properly? I can do it, but i don't have the proper tools and i would rather know it's being done right. I'm located in St. Cloud Minnesota but can deliver it to the MPLS or whereever needed. e-mail me if interested: allthrottlesnowmobileparts@gmail.com Thanks, Jamie.

A week out and $210 sounds like a good deal to me.

I know. It's just that summers on the way out and i'm anxious to get the rest of the repairs needed done. I want to be on the water next year, not wrenching on a boat. It will be a nice rig once it get everything done. On the positive side with stuff going wrong, i'll know what i have in the long run. How hard is this really to repair ( so it lasts), can i buy the tools needed for less then $210?

I also like to be HANDS ON---but trust me--it is a talent to be able to shim gears and make that drive run correctly--if you can't afford 210.00---how does 4 buck a gallon sound????

It's not about the money, i just don't want to wait a week to be up and running again.

I understand---do it yourself and bust it wide open and be out the rest of the season and then have you buy a new drive---make no sense to me with having owned boats with Merc outdrives and having learned that you only let certain people work on them----good luck

Its a good deal, in fact sounds extremely good.

The shimming tools alone will set you back over 1K. Add torque wrenches, bearing pullers, shim sets and more tools to put the thing together. Ordering the tools will take you more than a week.

Shimming will drive you nuts if you don't have the patience or disposition to take things apart a few time to get it right. Not shimming things right will buy you a ticket for a new drive.

Here's a link to the Alpha drive (many thanks to Don). Good reading

If you are in that much of a hurry then maybe http://www.sterndrive.cc/ would be the answer. A bit pricier then the parts but a backyard mechanic can install. Just a suggestion. No affiliation with SEI.
